Course description
This course aims to equip participants with a basic knowledge of alcohol, its effects on the body and how it may be used problematically by survivors. The morning session will focus on theory and the afternoon session will allow participants to consider the issues around facilitating disclosure of problematic drinking and recognising and responding to risk. An introduction to basic interventions for problem drinking will also be discussed alongside an overview of different treatment models available.

Learning Objectives
* To explore own beliefs about drinking and substance use
* To learn about the effects of alcohol on the body
* To understand how survivors can drink at hazardous and harmful levels
* To learn about the AUDIT screening tool and other questions to facilitate disclosure about drinking
* To identify the risks posed by drinking and extra issues to include within safety planning
* To gain a basic understanding of the cycle of change and other interventions
* To gain an overview of different treatment models and services available to those drinking problematically.

Who Should Attend?
Anyone working with domestic violence survivors, who wishes to gain more knowledge about alcohol use by their service users and learn how to offer support. Delegates should have attended a basic domestic violence training as domestic violence theory will not be covered in this course.
