Constructive approach to violence on women – London Feminism Meetup Group – 24th March 2009

Mother’s Day – Every day should be mother’s day

While many people are buying a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers for mother, feminists all over the country are focusing their attention on the problem of violence against women. Some used International Women’s Day to organise events and marches. Small groups of women activists are working with groups of abused women, in prisons, on the streets, asylum seekers, victims of honour killings and forced marriage, organising against the process of bringing in Sharia Law tribunals into Britain.

Our small London Feminist Freethinkers group is meeting to discuss the underlying questions, and what constructive action can and should be taken to address the continuing problems of violent physical and sexual violence in our society.

Any feminist or pro-feminists are invited to our meeting to discuss this on this coming Tuesday, 24th March, 7pm at Conway Hall.

We are realistic – and we have a particularly relevant perspective that is ignored by many people including many women and feminists. In not recognising the underlying traditional attitudes that create the conditions in which violence for both men and women thrives – it is easy for the public to miss the most obvious causes of violence and therefore not promote the policies that would address it.

There is a discussion paper on the Files Section on the Meetup group website for anyone interested in an atheist perspective on this subject
