When: Monday 8th June 2009, 18:30 – 20:30
Where: Committee Room 12, Houses of Parliament, London. SW1A 0AA

The Government will face calls to toughen proposals in the Equality Bill to close the gender pay gap at a meeting in Parliament on Monday evening. Despite it being nearly 40 years since the Equal Pay Act was passed women in the UK are still paid less than men for doing the same or equivalent work. Women working full-time are paid 17% less than men, while women working part-time are paid 37% less. Leading public figures will argue at this meeting that the proposals to close the pay gap proposed in the Equality Bill by the Government are inadequate and must be strengthened.
The meeting is organised by the Fawcett Society and UNISON and will be chaired by Jenni Russell (the Guardian). Speakers include:
* Dr Katherine Rake OBE, Fawcett Society
* Bronwyn McKenna, UNISON
* Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC
* Sarah Veale, TUC
* Kate Wareing, Oxfam
* Karon Monaghan QC, Matrix Chambers
* To register please use the online form on Fawcett’s web site.
