Education Co-Ordinator – Jewish Women’s Aid – 10th August 2009
14 – 16 hours per week – term time only; flexible pattern available
Initial 6 month contract
£28,949 pa pro rata
Established in Leeds over 20 years ago, Jewish Women’s Aid is the only registered UK charity for Jewish women, and their children, affected by domestic violence. Since 1992, we have been operating in London where we run a refuge, a confidential helpline, community outreach and education and awareness raising programmes. We aim to raise awareness of the existence of domestic abuse within the Jewish community and work towards its total eradication. We are one of a handful of external agencies who have been invited into Jewish schools, and are currently looking to take on an Educational Co-ordinator to work with our team of volunteers in delivering our education programme.
On a day to day basis, your role will be to devise and develop the programmes we need to reach and engage young Jewish people. From Year 7 through to Year 13, we work with both girls and boys, helping them to learn about what makes a healthy relationship, assisting them to identify the signs of abuse and teaching them to recognise that violence or abuse are issues which need to be faced and dealt with. You will be responsible not only for devising and delivering educational sessions, but will also need to co-ordinate our educational volunteers, who also run schools sessions, ensuring that they are fully trained and briefed and have the materials required.
Ideally, you will have a background in the teaching profession as you will need experience in both planning ‘lessons’ and presenting to groups of children. However, we are also open to people with a training background or who perhaps have teenage children; what is really important is your ability to engage with young people. Organisational skills are key and you should have some experience of managing groups of people. Knowledge and an understanding of the Jewish community would be highly advantageous. Finally, whilst we envisage that this role will need a commitment of 2 days a week, we will be looking for some flexibility at more intensive times, when we will need to commit to specific dates on which we deliver our programmes in schools.
If you have experience of engaging with young people and are looking for a challenging role in our very worthwhile charity, we would love to hear from you.
