Latest news – Gemma
Gemma is a national self-help group which was started in 1976 to lesson the isolation of disabled and bisexual women. As a member of Gemma you will have access to relevant information and chances to make new friends.
In Gemma we’re positive about sexuality and disability. You don’t have to hide or explain anything so you can relax and be yourself.
We are not a dating agency though lasting relationships and rewarding friendships have resulted from membership of Gemma.
Our friendship network is an integrated group of disabled and non-disabled lesbian and bisexual women and a means of joining a wider social circle.
Membership is open to disabled and non-disabled lesbian and bisexual women aged 16 and over, of whatever race, religion, colour, creed or background. We’re single and couples, married, exclusively lesbian, bisexual, parents, grandmothers, carers. We are women who are disabled or non-disabled or chronically ill, and many of us have health problems which are note visible.
We seek to increase awareness of the social needs of disabled lesbian and bisexual women not online in our own community but in society as a whole.
In 1981 we were a founding member of the British council of Disabled People.
Gemma is administered by a London-based Collective and members outside London are welcome to join and help discuss policy and relevant issues and smooth out the occasional difficulty.
Our quarterly newsletter is available in print, large print, on cassette and in Braille. The yearly subscription is £2.50/£5.00/£7.50 according to income. Personal ads in the friendship lists are confidential to members only. There is a taping, circle, Tape Connection and an email group.
We do not have a publishable phone number but there are phone contacts with the group for members only.
