Is the Press Complaints Commission Getting the Balance Right?
Robert Pinker, Advisor to the Press Complaints Commission
“The Commission has to resolve the conflicts that arise between the rights of a free press and complaints about privacy, intrusion and harassment” “Freedom of expression and privacy are both fundamental human rights but, in practice, they frequently come into conflict”
Two Cheers for Toleration? – a muddle, a paradox and the impotent?
Peter Cave, Chair of the Humanist Philosopher’s Group, BHA
“Do we tolerate others’ intolerable views … only when we think such toleration will lead to general rejection of those views?”
“Is tolerance just a makeshift, suitable for an overcrowded planet?”
“Not all views should be respected – nor should people when they wittingly
hold horrendous views”
There will be plenty of time for discussion. Some questions will be asked by women journalists, but please bring your own.
Admission is free but there is a recommended donation of £5 (£2.20 for students) to cover our costs. There will be the opportunity to join us if you are not already a member.
Please let us know if you are coming because we have to submit the names of those attending in advance.
