Short Course in Violence Against Women: Issues, Research and Policy – CWASU – October 2009
The Department of Applied Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit is running a short course on Violence against Women: Issues, Research and Policy.
The course can be taken as a separate course only or as part of a broader study programme.
This course is aimed at professionals working in or developing specialist services or policy in the fields of violence against women as well as other professionals and students with an interest in developing their knowledge or entering a career in this field. Led by Prof. Liz Kelly, this introductory course will introduce students to research on the prevalence, contexts and consequences of a range of forms of violence. By the end of this course students will be able to critically assess explanatory frameworks and contemporary policy.
During the first three days students will focus on critical analysis of theories, definitions and research methods, including historical overview. More detailed attention will then be paid to:
* Theories of gender, violence and human rights
* Intimate partner violence
* Harmful traditional practices e.g. female genital mutilation, honour crimes
* Trafficking and sexual exploitation
The course is delivered over six full days, in three two-day blocks:

Fee:
£440 per short course.
**If successfully completed and taken as a credit towards a masters or postgraduate certificate, this will be deducted from the overall course fee.
