UK Launch Of The African Women’s Decade 2010-2020 – WILPF – 31st July 2010

The African Women’s Decade (2010-2020) has been adopted by the African Union (AU), the continental organization that encompasses 53-member states. The UK section of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), is pleased to announce that the UK launch of the declared Women’s Decade 2010-2020 will be held on Saturday 31st July 2010, the African women’s day.

“The promise of Africa’s Decade for Women is action on the various declarations and conventions which have not yet delivered gender equality, women’s advancement and the respect of women’s rights in Africa. British women in solidarity with African women want to use the UK launch of the African Women Decade to push governments to work hard on women’s issues in Africa; to promote the Maputo Protocol ( African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa) and invite African countries who have not ratified the legal framework documents to ratify, those who have already ratified to put resources, mechanisms, clear policies or actions plans for implementation,” said Pat Pleasance UKWILPF president.

The event will be hosted by the Centre of Gender studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London in central London. Room G2, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG, UK
