DIY Home Maintenance Workshops – WAMT – 2, 9, 16 & 23 October 2010

Are you interested in gaining basic DIY skills for small jobs within the home?
Do you want to gain some practical skills in Carpentry & Joinery, Electrics, Painting & Decorating or Plumbing?

If yes, Women and Manual Trades (WAMT) are running exclusive Saturday workshops in all of the above trades for just £50 per person!

WAMT DIY IN THE HOME workshops are designed to give you the confidence to understand your home systems and carry out basic repairs; they also give you the knowledge to know what may be wrong with your system and when to call a professional.

Carpentry

This workshop will introduce the basic concepts of measuring, drilling and using the correct equipment for completing basic carpentry and joinery tasks in the home. The workshop gives participants the opportunity to put up a shelf, learn how to do mitre joints and obtain other valuable skills to boost individual confidence and knowledge.

Electrics Essentials

This workshop will cover the basics of how the home electrical system is wired up and the principles of electricity.
It will cover basics such as wiring a plug and changing a fuse but will also teach some fundamentals about safety – which is paramount when dealing with electricity! Information about the legislation covering the work that unqualified persons can undertake in the home will also be covered.

Painting and decorating

This workshop will allow participants to gain knowledge and hands on experience about using the correct tools for preparing and applying paint to surfaces. Information about the different types of pre preparation applications, the different types of paints and their uses including other finishes will also be part of the workshop.

Plumbing essentials

This workshop will cover how water comes in and out of your home and how to switch it off. You will also learn how to fix a dripping tap by changing the washer, how to unblock a sink and what the various tools and equipment are used to complete most jobs in the home.

Participants who take part in our workshops will gain hands-on experience during all demonstrations with valuable work sheets to take home for reference.
