Equal Pay Day – Fawcett – 2nd November 2010

Join Fawcett to demand women’s right to equal pay!

Women’s last paycheck of the year is arriving on 2 November 2010. Does that mean it’s time to put our feet up?

40 years after the Equal Pay Act, women working full-time in the UK are still paid on average 16.4% less per hour than men.

The full-time pay gap between women and men – at 16.4% – is equivalent to men being paid all the year round while women work for free after 2 November. Equal Pay Day is a national day of action to tackle the gender pay gap!

The Fawcett Society is calling on the government to take action to end the pay gap between men and women once and for all. We want: legislation to ensure big employers check they’re paying men and women fairly; an extension of the right to request flexible working to all employees and the government to encourage shared parenting through promoting flexible parental leave.

Every year on Equal Pay Day, people across the country unite to demand equal pay. Fawcett will be producing a campaigning activist guide to help supporters take action on equal pay day.

There are many creative ways that you can join the fight!

  • Hand out Fawcett’s Equal Pay postcards (coming soon!)
  • Sell or hand out cakes with one fifth missing to mark the pay women are missing out on
  • Wear red to symbolise that women are ‘in the red’ after 2 November
  • Sign Fawcett’s petition to hold the Coalition Government to account (coming soon!)
  • Write to your MP about the campaign for equal pay!

Keep checking our website – information and resources that you can use in the activities above are on their way. You can find out more about the reasons behind pay inequality and what can be done about it in our upcoming Equal Pay Guide.
