Volunteer needed – Women’s Design Service

Are you interested in the issues that effect women within the urban environment, and do you have the skills to help women in Islington influence planning in the borough?

Women’s Design Service is a charity working to promote women’s needs within the built environment. We are looking for a volunteer with experience of the planning system to help a group of women consult with the London Borough of Islington (LBI).

We have been approached by the Planning Department of the LBI to engage in consultation of its Core Strategy – the plan for the future of the borough. LBI intends to hold extended consultation from the end of October / early November 2010 through to January 2011, with a view to further discussions to help inform final drafts, which LBI will consult on later next year, on the following documents:
* Development Management Policies – setting out detailed policies and criteria for deciding on planning applications
* Site Allocations – setting out site specific policy for main sites where development or other change is expected, and to support specific objectives over the next 15 years.
* Bunhill and Clerkenwell Action Plan – setting out detailed policies to manage growth and change in this part of the borough to bring long lasting improvements and identify investment priorities.

Women’s Design Service has a group of local women who have, in the past, been involved in planning consultations with Islington. This group would from the basis for formulating a response to the above that would highlight the needs of women. A volunteer is needed to facilitate the group, liaise with LBI Planning Department, and compile formal responses to planning policy.

If you think you have the experience and passion and can give a few hours per week to be responsible for driving this project, we’d like to hear from you. Please contact us by email at hcarty@wds.org.uk or by phone on 020 7490 5210.

Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate experience/knowledge of working on community planning projects and of compiling responses to formal planning policy documents, as well as an understanding of the issues effecting women within the built environment.

Out-of-pocket expenses for travel and subsistence will be provided.
