Telling Tales: Stitch and Tell – Women’s Library – 27th November 2010

Telling Tales: Stitch and Tell

Saturday 27th November 2010, 12pm –4pm
Free

With the help of stitch doctor Barley Massey, leave behind a secret, a memory, a piece of emotional baggage (happy or sad) or simply your initials marking the moment by stitching onto hexagon patchwork pieces. Your creativity and contribution will form flowers or ‘rosettes’ which will be added to one of the walls of the exhibition, creating a patchwork pattern known as ‘grandmother’s garden’.

A drop in session aimed at all ages and abilities. There will be pre-prepared hexagon patches from Barley’s stash of pre loved and up cycled textiles and colourful threads. Barley will be on hand to show simple but effective decorative stitches or just go free styling. There will also be a range of craft stalls, which will give visitors the opportunity to browse and purchase a wide variety of craft products.

Hand Made Tales: Women and Domestic Crafts

28 October 2010 to 20 April 2011
Free

Cupcakes, knitting circles, and ‘grow your own’: each is back in fashion. But why bother? Why make things when, today, to buy is usually cheaper and far less time-consuming? The Women’s Library’s fascinating new exhibition Hand Made Tales provides an insight into the crafts practiced by women over the past hundred years and explores the changing motivations behind making objects for family and home. Showcasing a range of domestic crafts from quilting, dress-making, flower-arranging to weaving, the exhibition offers visitors a visual and sensual delight.
