Support Fawcett’s Bid For A Judicial Review Of The Budget – 6th December 2010

What is a Judicial Review? A judicial review is a legal tool that allows people with a sufficient interest in a decision made by Government to ask a judge to review the lawfulness of the decision; in Fawcett’s case we’re questioning the lawfulness of the June 2010 emergency Budget.
Why are Fawcett taking the Government to Court? Because we believe that the Treasury did not, as required by equality law, consider the impact that the emergency Budget would have on equality between women and men.
The law requires the Treasury to conduct a ‘gender equality impact assessment’. This ensures that the Government demonstrates a thorough understanding of the current status of gender equality, and that they’ve understood how their plans may disproportionately impact on women and adversely affect women’s equality.
Research shows that of the £8 billion worth of cuts made through changes to tax and welfare in the Budget, 70% are set to come from women’s pockets. The Fawcett Society believes such a skewed budget could not have been drawn up in accordance with the law.
What’s happening on Monday 6th December? On Monday, our lawyers will present Fawcett’s case to a Judge at the High Court who will then decide whether or not to grant us a judicial review of the Budget.

Making women bear the brunt of cuts is wrong;
drawing up a budget without thinking who it will affect is unlawful.
