Women and Worship: New Approaches to Sacred Space seminar – WDS – 16th March 2011

Women and Worship: New Approaches to Sacred Space seminar

Wednesday 16th March 2011, 13.30 – 17.30
City Centre Seminar Room, Department of Geography Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, E1 4NS

Half-day seminar forming the final element of the WDS project looking at women in relation to religious space.

Drawing on the visits to a church, a Buddhist centre and a mosque, and narrative work with women of faith in east London we shall ask:

    * how can we understand different faith spaces as communal and inclusive, if women are excluded from some of these?
    * is exclusion designed into religious buildings? Looking at the planning regulations around ‘change of use’ will help us to explore this.
    * if so, where is the appropriate space for dialogue? Can we share sacred space?

Speakers will include Dr HaeRan Shin – Lecturer, Bartlett School of Planning, Patrick Anderson – Planning Aid for London, and Dr Ann David – Principal Lecturer at Roehampton University.

The seminar will be followed by a drinks reception.
