Vicki Scarlett – Enfield Women’s Centre

The last few months have been extremely difficult with staff at Enfield Women’s Centre experiencing multiple bereavements. The most significant bereavement to this organisation is the loss of Vicki Scarlett.

In the early 1980‘s Vicki was a founder member of Enfield Women‘s Centre when she and col-leagues at Middlesex Polytechnic (later University) came together. Vicki was instrumental in ob-taining the current premises for the delivery of activities and services to women. In the late 1990‘s Vicki was again elected to do a stint on the Management Committee.

In 2004 we started our Fit For Life project (forerunner of our current physical activities pro-gramme) and Vicki took on the role of Yoga instructor which she retained till her death in January. Vicki was still teaching up to the Christmas break last December (her last few classes from a wheelchair). Her classes were legendary, she taught 11 classes across the borough and the large numbers who attended the ?farewell‘ to her spoke of her unending gentleness, patience and kindness. Vicki stated that her interest in yoga began here at Derby Road in the early 1980‘s, when she and her colleagues were doing yoga to a ?tape‘.

In tribute to Vicki and in recognition of her commitment to empowering women we are renaming this building, which has been the base for a huge number of activities and support services to women. In future our address will be;

Enfield Women‘s Centre,
Vicki Scarlett House,
31A Derby Road,
Enfield
EN3 4AJ.

We are organising a small ceremony to mark the occasion of the naming of the building. If you knew Vicki and would like to contribute your memories or participate in this tribute, do please get in touch with us urgently. We would especially like to hear from any women who were part of the original group and who attended activities here at that time.
