Youth Internship Programme
Salary: £25/day
Reporting to: Youth Programme Assistant
Commitment required: Six months minimum contract July – December 2011. Minimum 3 days/week 10am-4pm

Job description:

FORWARD is a campaign and support charity that promotes the health and human rights of African women and girls. Young People Speak Out (YPSO) is FORWARD’s youth initiative to engage 16-24 year olds in advocating against gender based violence, particularly female genital mutilation (FGM). The internship enables the candidate opportunity to gain hands on experience of facilitation, leadership and project management skills, by supporting the Youth Programme with direct delivery of the project. Supervision and training is provided throughout the six month placement.

Responsibilities:
* To arrange and chair fortnightly meetings with members of the youth programme and ensure the project is progressing towards its objectives and undertake remedial action in response to any issues arising.
* Correspond with group members regularly and manage social network site to promote activities and share information.
* Support the organisation of internal workshops, other projects and events under YPSO and use networking and research skills to identify resources/guest speakers to enhance the programme.
* If necessary, support the organisation of other FORWARD events including conferences, consultation meetings, health bazaar, and informal networking events.
* Write short articles and reports where necessary to share information on the youth programme activities and issues pertaining to young women’s health and rights.
* Outline a work plan schedule and complete mid-term and end of internship review forms to share progress and learning during supervisions.
* Co-manage logistics of YPSO activities with supervisor eg; prepare budgets, secure venues, organise refreshments.
* To carry out other office duties as and when required by the supervisor or Director of FORWARD.

Criteria:

Essential
* Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English language.
* Ability to develop new and innovative ideas and seize opportunities to enhance the youth programme.
* Competent IT skills for daily use.
* Self starter, motivated, willing to take and give direction.
* Experience of leadership, strong decision making ability and initiative to solve problems.
* Good understanding of issues relating to sexual health, human rights, gender based violence and FGM.
* Passion for advocating for the rights and dignity of women and girls.

Desirable
* Experience of planning and executing an event.
* Facilitation skills and experience of delivering presentations or training.
* Creative skills and interests in art, drama, music etc.
