The Fawcett Society, Coventry Women’s Voices and the Centre for Human Rights in Practice invite you to:
Unravelling Equality – the impact of the public spending cuts on women
A parliamentary seminar
Wednesday 22nd June from 2.30 – 4.00 pm
Committee Room 15, House of Commons, Westminster
The spending cuts and the damage to equality
Women are acting as shock absorbers for the cuts, bearing the brunt of job losses, reduced benefits and the rollback of public services like the NHS.
Anna Bird, Acting Chief Executive, The Fawcett Society will provide a brief overview of the implications of the government’s deficit-cutting approach for women’s equality in the UK, and will present new analysis from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) that reveals the gendered impact of tax and benefit changes on single-adult households which provides evidence of a meaningful method of analysis that the government could, but currently does not employ, in order to advance its compliance with equality law.
The impact of the cuts on the ground –the reality for women in Coventry
A new report, Unravelling Equality – A Human Rights and Equality Impact Assessment of the Public Spending Cuts on Women in Coventry published in May this year examines in detail the effects of both local and national spending cuts on women in one city.
Report authors Mary-Ann Stephenson, Chair, Coventry Women’s Voices and Dr James Harrison, Co-director, Centre for Human Rights in Practice, University of Warwick School of Law will share their findings and highlight the impact on some of the most vulnerable women who will face a devastating combination of cuts.
