Women and Exile in Irish Literature and Culture Reading Group – LIWC – starts 12th Ocotber 2011
2pm-4pm on Wednesdays
October 12th to December 14th 2011
This reading group will explore how the experience of Irish women emigrants is represented in the work of a range of twentieth-century Irish writers. It will involve discussion of novels, short stories, and poems by writers such as Edna O’Brien, Eavan Boland, Emma Donoghue, Moy McCrory, Anna May Mangan, James Joyce, George Moore, Liam O’Flaherty, William Trevor, and Colm Toíbín. We will also watch a number of films and documentaries and look at some relevant paintings.
The series will be led by Ellen McWilliams (Bath Spa University) and will feature guest visits from authors who have written about the Irish community in England, and the experience of growing up Irish in England. The group will meet every Wednesday from 2pm-4pm for ten weeks, from the 12th October to the 14th December. A full reading list will be provided in the first session (2pm–4pm, Wednesday 12th October), and all texts and materials needed for the group will be provided in this session.
Participation in the reading group is free, but places are limited, so please contact the London Irish Women’s Centre as soon as possible to register for the group: drop in to 59 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 OAR, email Joanne Slinger at info@liwc.co.uk, or telephone 020 7249 7318.
