Take Action on Lap Dancing! – Object

Thanks to the new licensing regime for lap dancing clubs which many of you helped OBJECT secure, councils now have the power to greatly restrict the number of lap dancing clubs they license – even setting a limit of zero.

Many councils are using this legislation effectively to help curb the number of clubs and to prevent new clubs from opening. For example, North Tyneside has adopted a ‘nil policy’ to effectively close down 8 clubs. Other councils are setting restrictions to prevent lap dancing clubs from operating in proximity to schools, places where children play, community centres, residential areas, shopping centres or any place that people congregate.

These new licensing powers are vital in stopping the spread of commercial sexual exploitation and in clamping down on the no-go zones that the sex industry creates.

With many councils still consulting on the implementation of this legislation, and others deciding whether or not to renew current licenses, now is the time to take action to make sure that the powers that this new licensing regime affords are used to their fullest.
