- Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Andrew Smith, will be the keynote speaker at a conference to highlight the links between women, child poverty and childcare in January.
- The conference, jointly run by national childcare charity Daycare Trust and the TUC, will be held on 26th January 2004 at the TUC central London headquarters.
- It will focus on why affordable quality childcare for all is key to tackling poverty for women, children and families
|
Keynote speakers include:
- Rt Hon Andrew Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
- Frances O'Grady, Deputy General Secretary, TUC
- Dr Katherine Rake, Director, Fawcett Society and Co-Chair, Women's Budget Group

- Gill Haynes, Chief Executive, National Childminding Association
- Polly Toynbee, Guardian columnist

Women's pay and lifetime income are still significantly lower than men's. Many of the reasons for the continuing poverty faced by women and their children are linked to the lack of affordable childcare in the UK.
The conference will highlight the childcare challenge and what needs to be done to make life better in 21st century Britain for women and their families.
Daycare Trust will also publish the results of its 2004 Cost of Childcare Survey at this conference.
