1867 Women's Suffrage amendment to Reform Bill introduced in Parliament by J.S. Mill.
1918 Representation of the People Act: women over 30 years and men over 21 years given the right to vote.
1928 Equal Franchise Act: Women allowed to vote on an equal basis to men for the first time.
1929 Millicent Garrett Fawcett dies.
1970 Equal Pay Act passed.
1975 The Sex Discrimination Act passed.
1990 Independent Taxation for married women
1997 120 women MPs returned to Westminster: women's representation doubles.
National Minimum Wage introduced. Since women make up the majority of low paid workers this measure lifted many out of poverty.
1998 New Deal for Lone Parents
1999 First elections for Scottish and Welsh Parliaments result in record levels of women's representation in Britain. Around 40% of MSPs and AMs are women.
2002 Sex Discrimination Act amended to allow for political parties to use positive measures increase women's representation.
2003 Wales is the first Parliament in the world to achieve equal numbers of women and men.
Tax credits system changed so that they are paid to the main carer.
Maternity leave extended and paid paternity leave introduced.
