SATURDAY 26 JANUARY 2-3pm Pots and pans protest at the World Bank, New Zealand House, Haymarket SW1, London SW1 Tube: Piccadilly or Trafalgar Square Dear Sisters and Friends, ** We want to show international support for our Argentinian sisters who are raising the voice of grassroots women. ** In response to the collapse of the economy, millions of people have taken to the streets to demonstrate their total rejection of all political parties and politically-aligned trade unions and NGOs. In addition to the well-established cacerolazos, a pots and pans protest, self-mobilised assemblies are being held in neighbourhoods all over the country. ** The Sindicato de Amas de Casa de Santa Fe (Housewives Trade Union), an autonomous grassroots organisation, is holding women’s assemblies in the poorest neighbourhoods and is circulating the attached Women’s Manifesto. ** SAC co-ordinates the Global Women’s Strike in Argentina and is part of our international network, WinWages,* which includes organisations of domestic workers, Indigenous and other workers, sex workers and other grassroots women, in Guyana, Peru, India and Uganda, as well as other women’s organisations in Ireland, Spain and the US. The Strike network extends to women in over 60 countries. ** We are calling a ‘cacerolazo’ in London and asking women in these networks to have cacerolazos on the same day. We focus on women because we carry the greatest yet the least recognised burden of policies of genocide and theft imposed by the IMF/World Bank and implemented by corrupt politicians, trade unions and NGOs. ** The ‘cacerolazo’ we propose in London welcomes all women, children and men but particularly Argentinian women and all Latin American, Indigenous and other women from countries of the South. ** Join us next week. We invite people to speak out about how women and girls are fighting against globalization in our home countries and here. Following the wisdom of the Argentinian movement, speeches on behalf of politically-aligned organisations are not welcome. ** And of course, don’t forget to bring pots and pans! ** Please circulate this invitation to your networks. ** Called by: WinWages (Women’s International Network for Wages for Caring Work), Red Internacional de Mujeres por un Salario para el Trabajo de Cuidado, Crossroads Women’s Centre, 230A Kentish Town Road, London NW5 2AB - Tel: 020-7482 2496 ** Fax: 020-7209 4761

Dear Guestbook Users and Visitors - welcome to 2002 and the still unchanged Guestbook. - In March of last year we did suggest making changes to the Guestbook but nobody seemed to think we should. However, the facility has been stretched with some of the more lengthy entries. - Up until now we have archived these and provided a link through to the longer text but may have to consider restricting the amount of information entered in this way. - But we wouldn't want this to be seen as restricting access to information, but we may have to think of (and are open to suggestions for) ways of including longer postings from groups who are not part of the Women in London directory. - Also just to remind any women's groups or groups working around issues relevant to women that have a web site can list your web site on microsyster's site where you can "Promote a Women's Web Site". - We hope that groups who are interested in having links will also want to use this facility.

The United Nations Information Technology Service (UNITeS) is looking for professional or university graduate-level women volunteers, to work directly with people and institutions in developing countries, to build their capacity on the applications of ICT to human development. --------------------------------------------------------------- UNITeS [http://www.unites.org] is a global volunteer initiative, placing volunteers into communities and development institutions in developing countries, to extend the opportunities of the digital revolution. The UN Volunteer programme UNV coordinates this initiative [http://www.unv.org] ----------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT DO ICT VOLUNTEERS WITH UNITeS DO? ------------------------------------- UNITeS volunteers have undertaken a variety of ICT projects in developing countries: - helping Mongolian herders use the Internet to obtain price and weather information - setting up community telecenters to help Bedouin women connect with healthcare information and nonprofit women's organizations - helping develop a strategy to link thousands of students and teachers in secondary schools in Botswana with their counterparts in industrialized countries and elsewhere, for collaborative research, teaching and learning programs. - in Orissa, India, training more than 500 participants (village leaders, self-help groups and community level workers) in ICT.  Doctors in the primary health centers now use ICT to create and maintain a medical database, a large number of government officials in the area now work independently to access information and generate data/reports, and many community members use email to send messages to government officials, providing a platform at the grassroots level to make their voices heard at various levels. ---------------------------------------------------------------- UNITeS volunteers have served in Benin, Botswana, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Ecuador, India, Namibia, Jordan, South Africa, Tanzania, Bhutan, Mongolia and Chile. ----------------------------------------- THE NEED FOR FEMALE RECRUITS/HOW TO APPLY ----------------------------------------- UNITeS welcomes CVs from all potential volunteers, but needs to reach more female candidates, who are currently under-represented.  Many of our programs have a focus on empowering women and girls in poor communities, through ICT. The UNITeS web site http://www.unites.org has information and FAQs about the program, and how to apply as a volunteer. ---------------------------------------------- Jayne Cravens [jayne.cravens@unvolunteers.org] Online Volunteering Specialist United Nations Volunteers [http://www.unv.org] Bonn, Germany cf Netaid http://www.netaid.org

Is the Mayor listening to Londoner's views? Letter from Reaching Out Investigative Committee Reaching Out: The Mayor's consultation The London Assembly's role is to make sure that the Mayor listens to the people of London before making his decisions. For this reason, the Assembly wants to hear about Londoners' experiences of Mayor Ken Livingstone's consultations to date. Over the last year, the Mayor has sought the views of Londoners in a range of different ways, including through surveys, People's Question Time, Meet the Mayor events, the State of London debate and invitations to comment on specific London strategies and policies. He has also conducted high profile consultations on issues like the Notting Hill Carnival route and plans for a congestion charge. The Assembly wants to ensure that London's new government is as inclusive and responsive as possible. We are particularly interested in any difficulties Londoners have encountered when participating in the consultation process and any improvements that can be made. Anyone wishing to make their views known can do so by contacting the London Assembly by email at greg.norton@london.gov.uk or by addressing responses to: Reaching Out Investigative Committee, c/o Greater London Authority Secretariat, First Floor, Romney House, Marsham Street, London SW1P 3PY The deadline for responses is 18 January 2002. Further details about the Assembly's review of the Mayor's consultation process can be found at www.london.gov.uk/assembly/reachmtgs/

Hi: Hello from the US. I'm an American feminist, author, public speaker and lawyer. I thought you might like to know about my memoir, "Eat First--You Don't Know What They'll Give You, The Adventures of an Immigrant Family and Their Feminist Daughter." I am a founder of NOW (National Organization for Women) and I was the first woman attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). My testimony on the EEOC's experience was presented before a select committee of the House of Lords when it was considering anti-sex discrimination legislation for Britain in the 1970's, which was subsequently passed. My book is written with a light touch, and has been published in the US and the UK and used as a textbook at two American universities. Information on ordering the book is contained at the end of my website at http://www.erraticimpact.com/fuentes. The book may also be ordered from amazon.co.uk

We are trying to identify new genes that contribute towards the development of AD and find a test for AD by looking at the proteins and genetic material in blood. This may lead to future preventative and therapeutic strategies. The study involves a 45 minute interview and a small blood sample. Who can take part? Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease who are 60 years and their carers/partners. Brothers or sisters of people with AD so we can try and work out why some people in a family have AD and others do not. Individuals willing to act as controls subjects who are over 60 years and do not have dementia. This important as we need to compare people without dementia to those will it so we can see which genes and proteins are altered in people with AD. It is important that we recruit people into all three of these categories, but particularly the siblings and the control subjects. If you are interested in participating or would like more information then please write to Catherine Foy Section of Old Age Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, De Crespigny Road, Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8AF or telephone me on 020 7848 0626 or email at C.Foy@iop.kcl.ac.uk

The Bosnian Support Fund is showing an award-winning documentary about two Bosnian women who were raped at the Omarska concentration camp during the Bosnian War (1992-95). They had the courage to take their attackers to the Hague War Crimes Tribunal, and rape is now recognised as a crime against humanity. We will follow the showing of the documentary ("Calling The Ghosts") with a panel-led discussion about how women are rebuilding society in postwar Bosnia. Please contact me for venue and details. Stroud Women Walk for Peace in Afghanistan * * * * * Two Stroud women feel so strongly about the impending crisis in Afghanistan that they are going to walk to London to present a giant postcard to the Prime Minister, collecting signatures on the way. They will leave Stroud on Tuesday 6th November, and their six day walk will take them through Cirencester, Cricklade, Swindon, Marlborough, Newbury, Reading and Windsor, arriving in London on Sunday 11th November. They will present their postcard at 10 Downing Street on Monday 12th November. Carol Kambites and Grace Trevett are especially angered by the US and British Governmentsí lack of attention to the warnings by aid agencies, such as Oxfam and Christian Aid, that hundreds of thousands of people will die and millions will suffer unless there is a pause in the bombing to allow aid to enter the country before the Afghan winter sets in. Grace and Carol are calling for an immediate end to the war so that food and other aid can be delivered before the winter. They are asking women to join them on their walk for all or part of the way. They also want men and women to walk through towns with them and to offer practical support. Carol Kambites said Unless there is at least a pause in the war in the next week or so, there will be a catastrophe affecting millions of innocent Afghanis, who did not elect the Taliban and have absolutely no responsibility for Osama bin Laden. The impending catastrophe will dwarf the attacks on the World Trade Centre, and will harden opinion against the West. The only way to defeat terrorism is to tackle the causes. * * * * * Women Opposing War (WOW) * * * * * ** The provisional itinerary is as follows: ** Tuesday 6th November 8am: Leave from Stroud High Street (the site of the daily vigils for peace and justice). Walk via Cirencester to Cricklade. (approx. 20 miles) ** Wednesday 7th November 8am: Leave Cricklade and walk via Swindon to Marlborough (approx. 20 miles) ** Thursday 8th November 8am: Leave Marlborough and walk via Hungerford to Newbury (approx. 18 miles) ** Friday 9th November 8am: Leave Newbury and walk to Reading (approx. 17 miles) ** Saturday 10th November 8am: Leave Reading and walk to Windsor. (approx. 18 miles) ** Sunday 11th November 8am: Leave Windsor and walk to west London. (approx. 18 miles) ** Monday 12th November: Walk to Downing Street (approx. 7miles), and present postcard at 2pm ** We welcome support of all types, especially walkers (although the core walkers will be women, men are very welcome to join us through the towns) and overnight accommodation.

Hi. My name is Dany Cotton and I work for the London Fire Brigade recruitment department. We are currently looking to recruit more women and people from black and minority ethnic groups. I logged on to your website to see if I could find any way of contacting large numbers of women to tell them about this great job opportunity. I found the website very useful and easy to navigate. If anybody wants to contact me about a career as a London firefighter, or is interested in coming to one of our open days designed to give women and black and ethnic minority people a chance to look at the recruitment process and chat to existing firefighters, then please contact me, or log on to the website.

To all women in London, I think you must be very strong and brave to live in such an unfriendly and time consuming place. Myself, I'm not sure how much longer I can take living in such a draining place. I am free to choose where I live and in that respect I am very lucky. I wish you all the best of luck and would ask you to smile at the next woman you see, just because you don't know someone doesn't mean you don't have to treat them with contempt.

Message from BBC Television - Looking for potential contributor. I work for BBC Religious Broadcasting. We are currently developing a series for BBC 2, which which would involve people undertaking 'spiritual journeys' of various sorts - some traditional, some more 'New Age' orientated. We are looking for a woman who would be interested in spending a week at a New Age women's retreat in Canada - taking part in a variety of group experiences based on a range of Aboriginal, Native American and Tibetan philosophies (meditation, dance, drumming, sweat lodging etc.). Ideally, this woman would be someone who does not have an existing interest in New Age spirituality, but who is open to the possibility of changing her life and perspective. We are particularly keen to hear from someone who, because of income and home responsibilities, would not normally have the opportunity to have this kind of experience. I must stress that this series has not yet been commissioned, but I would be keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in taking part. Thank you for taking the time to read this far. Best wishes Trish Connolly BBC Religion - Factual TV 'trish.connolly@bbc.co.uk' 0161 244 3301 (Office - direct)

Hi Everyone. I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about a brilliant project I am involved in at work that is already benefitting and supporting lots of women. I work for a not-for-profit company called Era and we concentrate on economic and social development and regeneration work. We have developed a FREE LEARNING NETWORK FOR WOMEN. The courses have been specifically designed to help women running their own business, professionals and freelancers acheive personal and business success. We work with individuals and organisations and have a soft skills focus, courses include creativity, leadership, managing money. Our FREE GATEWAY workshops help the individual identify their talents and gifts, navigate their way past obstacles and create an exciting vision for the future with a realistic gamplan. We are able to offer all our top class workshops (which are ususally offered in big corporations or for £600-900 for a two day course) for FREE. The workshops are very partcipatory as we believe that other people's insights and experience can offer brilliant input, this is complemented by a strong structure to the day and an expert facilitator. The feedback we have received has been very positive. All the workshop run from 9-5pm and are on week days. We recommend that people attend our gateways first, which allow you to clarify the right learning journey for you and then pick and choose from our workshops in the order you want to take them. Our next FREE gateways runs on the 5th & 11th June. If you would like to discuss this further or book a place please feel free to drop me an email or give me a call - 020 74015389 or carenowen@era-ltd.com. Thanks for your time, Caren

Hello all, My name is Kate, and I work in the press office at the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square. Currently, we are putting on a production called Blasted by Sarah Kane. Some of you may have heard of this playwright, and others have not, but I do think that her works will be of interest to many of you. Sarah Kane's career was short lived; she committed suicide two years ago, and in her wake she left five plays of great controversy that deal with current women's issues of violence, love and power. You are welcome to email me at rct_press@hotmail.com for the details of the show. thanks, Kate Hill

You could apply for an 'e-enabled computer' if you can show how it could help you as an individual or a group have a 'positive impact on your community'. The scheme is called 'BT Community Connections' and after a bit of internal struggle about keeping this information to ourselves, we thought we should let others know about it before we apply ourselves. The next deadline is very soon - 6th April 2001 - please go to the web link below to make an online application. Thanks to Hackney CVS 'Spark' magazine for alerting us (and now you) to this.

In response to the last message about links. We are hoping to offer this option in the near future. In the meantime anyone who wants to "promote a women's web site" can do so on microsyster's own site. This is not only to provide the opportunity to let other women know about sites that offer women orientated information and advice, but also an opportunity to show how women as web designers, etc., are using the internet in a positive and hopefully challenging way.

I think the page is excellent, easy to navigate, and will prove useful. I would like to suggest a page with links to individual women's web sites, mine for instance, because I want to get information out there freely and links are helpful. I would certainly put a link to yours.

Dear Guestbook Users and Visitors - when we first started the 'Guestbook' facility on Women in London, we were not sure exactly how it would be used (and if you look at the list we have in the introduction, our suggestions do not really match what has been said). We are thinking of re-starting the guestbook facility, as it is now quite big, but more importantly not necessarily with the best options for those who want to use it. So, we would like to hear from you, whether you are some one who has used the guestbook and / or regularly views it for your opinions. You can either just put your comments here, or email use direct, or you can use the survey form (see webe link below) from last summer and just to the last section on the guestbook (this allows you to be annonymous). As the second most used section of the site, we are trying to be 'responsive to need' (to use the current jargon!)
