International outcry led by Amnesty International helped quash her sentence. Now, Amina Lawal faces the same sentence. The man involved was aquitted for 'lack of evidence'. Her appeal hearing is on Monday May 27. If she loses her appeal she will be buried up to her waist and then stoned to death. Please use our web site to send a message to the Nigerian President against her sentence http://www.mertonai.org/amina With 8 days left, please forward the address to other people We are also collecting signatures in London for our open letter to the Nigerian President. I wonder if any women's group would like to help. Amnesty International (UK) - London Merton Group Women and e-democracy / government Does any one have any examples, whether a short term project or an ongoing process where ICT, but specifically use of the internet, has encouraged or enabled women to more actively participate in a democratic or consultative process and / or government? Do you know of any community, regeneration or tenant's organisation that has successfully used this medium to enable women to have a voice (and that it has been heard)? For instance, are any voluntary and community networks using this to inform themselves when taking up their places on the boards of Local Strategic Partnerships? (note - this is a recent development in the UK but other countries may have similar setups where regional or city authorities 'consult' with communities on priorities etc..) Or are you aware of any work or research being done on this issue? For instance, myth has it that many women are alienated from technology. If this is true, doesn't the proposal to make more government e-government further exclude women? Any local, national or international examples gratefully received. Once any information received is collated, we will be happy to make it available to anyone interested. microsyster Women and Technology - The United Nations wants your opinion The International Telecommunication Union - the United Nations specialized agency for Telecommunications - would like your opinion on issues relating to women and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT's). As you know, Information and Communication Technologies play an increasingly powerful role in shaping our society. In order to better understand this phenomenon and its impact on the lives of women, we have created an on-line survey to gather information about this important topic. This survey is being conducted as part of our activities to mark World Telecommunication Day on 17 May and to help guide us as we work toward the World Summit on the Information Society. This Summit is to be convened by the International Telecommunication Union under the auspices of the Secretary General of the United Nations and will be held in Geneva in December 2003, and in Tunis in 2005. We would ask that you take the time to visit the website at http://www.itu.int/newsroom/wtd/2002/survey and answer the survey questions. We would also ask that you share this information with the organizations you represent, interested colleagues, or friends by email or by posting it on your website. If you are a member of the media we would be pleased if you would share this information with your viewers, listeners or readers. We will notify you of the results of the survey as soon as they are posted on our website. If you require further information contact us at pressinfo@itu.int Invitation to join the Virtual International Women's University's (vifu)first internet conference: VEINS - Virtual Encounters In North-South Politics: War, Peace, and the Future of Civil Society: The Case of Palestine Vifu, a network of about 1.000 women academics, researchers and NGO-activists, who attended the International Women's University (ifu) in 2000, announces its first virtual conference. The conference starts Thursday May 2nd, 2002 at 11 a.m. MEST at http://www.vifu.de/network/conference.html and it will last until May 22nd. The main subject of the conference will be the disquieting conflict in the Middle East which will be analyzed according to the following agenda for research: All parties are wholeheartedly invited to join the conference. For further information, contributions, links and discussions, please check our virtual conference web page http://www.vifu.de/network/conference.html Race for Life Since the first Race for Life was held in London's Battersea Park in 1994, over 450,000 women have come together to raise over £20 million for Cancer Research UK's groundbreaking work to find cures for cancers that touch women's lives. From that one event in 1994, Race for Life has grown to a series of 100 races across the UK, thanks to the determination and dedication of women like you, and your supporters. This year we are asking you to help us even more, by coming together to help us raise £12 million to fund Cancer Research UK's pioneering work into the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer. Many women taking part on the day also wear back signs with a special message of memory or celebration.
Invest in Caring, Not Killing On Friday 3 May as part of the Mayday Festival of Alternatives, we will be showing videos and exhibitions with the theme "Invest in Caring, Not Killing". Please drop in between 12 noon-7pm at an open day at the Crossroads Women's Centre (230A Kentish Town Rd, London NW5 2AB). All women and men welcome. Among the attractions will be a display and information about the Global Women's Strike - international grassroots actions every 8 March. Women in over 80 countries have taken part in the Strike. There will be an exhibition of unique information and photos of Strike actions including from Argentina, Ghana, Guyana, India, Ireland, Spain, Peru, Trinidad, Uganda, different cities in the US, London and others. We'll show a thirty-minute video about Strike events in many countries with Spanish subtitles, at different times throughout the afternoon starting at 1pm. The Strike website will be open for people to browse. Information about the Strike will be available for people to take away in 34 languages. The Strike demands that society "Invest in Caring, Not Killing" and is women's reply globally to US economic, political and military domination of the world. We demand a world which values all women's work and every life, an end to America's new war and all wars. We call for a transfer of the $900 + billion military budget into the essentials of life water, sanitation, health, nutrition, literacy and payment for all caring work. We will also play other videos which reveal some of the history of the women's movement against overwork, including the pathbreaking "All Work and No Pay", a BBC "Open Door" documentary from 1976 with people from our Centre. We hope to see you there. Power to the sisters to Stop the World and Change it! Tel: 020 7482 2496 Fax: 020 7209 4761 Email: womenstrike8m ANTI NAZI ACTION STAMP ON THE NAZIS - NO LE PEN HERE! PREPARE TO RESPOND The synagogue on Green Lanes, just south of Manor House, was attacked last weekend - almost certainly by fascists. ANL supporters have visited the synagogue today and offered solidarity and support to the rabbi. An ANL statement has been put together signed by Jeremy Corbyn and others (more details soon). The BNP may win seats in Burnley or Oldham on Thursday. If this happens we want to hold very loud and visible protests against the nazis. A plan is emerging to congregate from 5.00pm on Friday at Turnpike Lane tube station - we want to go for protest marches. Hopefully the synagogue will act as an anti-nazi focus and a place for all the protests in the area to converge. For confirmation of details that the action is going ahead contact Keith Flett 07803-167-266 Tongues on Fire: Asian Women's Film Festival At venues across London plus special events including an interview with Mira Nair and discussion on Asian women and comedy with Meera Syal. I am a woman film director who grew up in Chicago in the 60's and 70's, raised by a strong feminist mother who raised five children virtually single-handedly. I should feel good about myself and my capabilities, and yet, in my film career, I still found myself battling my body image. And I am an attractive woman who modeled internationally! I realized that no matter what we're doing in the world, no matter who we are, body image is a battle almost every woman fights, everyday of her life. So I interviewed women across the U.S., from almost every socio-economic, age, and race background to find out how we feel about ourselves, why we do, and how we can raise our self-esteem to impact the world powerfully and positively. This is not a commercial film. It does not support the established and secure perspective of the male gaze. So I find myself looking for ways to get this very empowering feature film to the amazing women I made it for. I wrote, directed, shot, and edited Body: The Value of Women. It was an official selection of the Digidance 2000/Slamdunk Film Festival in Park City and the American Film Institute's Digital Filmmaker's Symposium 2000. It moves and raises self-esteem in everyone, man, woman, and child who watches it. For more information go to: http://www.thevalueofwomen.com STOP THE KILLING! All welcome) The Greater London Domestic Violence Project (GLDVP) is part of London Action Trust, a voluntary organisation which works to break the cycle of offending and create safer communities in Greater London. The GLDVP was set up in 1997 with the aim of increasing safety for survivors of domestic violence, and to hold abusers accountable for their behaviour. We work to ensure that good practice in domestic violence work is transferred across London, bring together key agencies to develop London-wide policies, raise awareness about domestic violence and increase the effectiveness of inter-agency work. A major part of the work of the project since 2001 has been the development of the first ever London Domestic Violence Strategy which was published jointly with the Greater London Authority and the Association for London Government. This aims to co-ordinate domestic violence work across all sectors and a London-wide Domestic Violence Forum has been established to ensure that this work is carried forward. Other recent exciting developments have included the establishment of an internet support group which receives over 200,000 hits a month http://ivy.ivillage.co.uk/boards/ivy/ukrl/exploreabuse?forum=60&maxlevel=100 and working in partnership with Cityspace to provide practical information for survivors of domestic violence on all 200 of their recently installed i-point internet kiosks. We have also recently secured funding to develop the support which the project provides to the voluntary sector. We aim to increase the opportunities for voluntary sector groups to network, share information and develop support mechanisms. Among other things we will be producing a monthly e-bulletin to update people on the project and other information relevant to the sector. We hope that this work will ensure that the expertise and knowledge of the voluntary sector is integrated into all future domestic violence work in London. An evening of inspiring presentations, debate and networking - Guest speakers include Anuradha Vittachi, Director, OneWorld.net Robin Mansell, Dixons Chair in New Media and the Internet, LSE 7.00pm Wednesday 17th April 2002 The Africa Centre, 38 King Street, Covent Garden, London Places are limited, rsvp to rsvp@vitamin-e.net Can digital technology improve peoples' lives in the developing world? Maybe. But wiring up rural African villages with broadband Internet access is no panacea. The technologies that work in Clerkenwell aren't always appropriate in Cote d'Ivoire. At Vitamin-e we believe that there is a role for ICT in economic and social development, in the promotion of human rights, and in campaigns for political reform. Locally appropriate sustainable technologies hold enormous potential to empower citizens in developing countries - and enable more Southern initiatives to speak up in the international debates on development. On 17th April Vitamin-e will meet to discuss the most appropriate uses of digital technology in international development. As well as hearing from the speakers above, it will be a chance to speak to people who have successful projects underway. If you are running or supporting a project that you would like others to know about please send us 100 words about the project and the lessons learned. Email to info@vitamin-e.net We require volunteers from the business community to support and deliver programmes involving Enterprise to students between 4 - 24 years old. Young Enterprise is a national education charity founded in 1963 to forge links between schools, businesses and the community. Its mission is to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise. Young Enterprise operates a number of programmes for young people on a learning-by-doing principle. These include running a real company in Company Programme, Team Programme; Primary Programme; Graduate Programme; and learning about aspects of business from first hand experiences of volunteers in Project Business and Entrepreneurship Masterclass. Young Enterprise London are particularly focused on reaching students from a variety of backgrounds. The programmes are delivered by volunteers called business advisers or partners and we are very keen to increase the number of women business volunteers. The delivery of our programmes relies on the active involvement of volunteers. It is these volunteers who bring the learning experience to life for the thousands of young people who benefit from our programmes each year. Volunteers and business supporters can make a real difference to the current life and future potential of the students they support.
