19th September 2002 Disabled Women Hold Up Half the Sky
Disabled women's issues have seemingly dropped off the equalities agenda recently. We make up more than half the disability movement, yet many of us still do not have an equal part to play in the movement or in society as a whole.
We are Black, white, Asian, lesbian, mothers, single, heterosexual, celibate, young and old and we experience multiple discrimination.
This conference will be a chance for disabled women to get together (for the first time in 10 years!) to network, to discuss some of the issues which affect us and hopefully to influence the policy and decision makers.
A report from the conference will be published and all women attending will receive a copy as well as distributing it to the decision makers as well.  It will also be a chance to have some fun.  We hope that disabled women from across London will join us for exciting debate and help celebrate our lives.

2nd August 2002 Born In Flames
a film by Lizzie Borden 1983 , USA , 78 min, 16mm, Colour
New York, ten years after the most peaceful revolution that the world has ever seen, and the governing Socialist party is emphasising the need for unity on the slow road to reform.  However, discontent is surfacing, particularly from the women's groups.  Vigilante groups are formed to combat the rise in street violence and rape.  The Women's Army rally support in their protest against the of women's jobs.  The urgent need for widespread publicity about these and other issues drive the Women's Army to approach two underground radio stations; the Black-run Radio Phoenix and the rival punk station Radio Regazza.  Both are reluctant to be involved but give their support on the news of the death in FBI custody of a prominent Black member of the Women's Army.  Increased surveillance and arrests bring the, often fragmented, women's groups together to work towards a common goal as events move towards an explosive climax.  Born In Flames attempts to show how sexual politics and, to a lesser extent class and race can be combined when trying to effect social change.
Organised with 'Ladyfest London' at The Rio Cinema, Dalston at 11.30pm - £5 at the door.

29th July to 2nd August 2002 The impact of changes by New Labour on local government and social policy related to women's issues
Sylvia Bashevkin, professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto is the author of 'Women on the Defensive: Living through Conservative Times' (University of Chicago Press, 1998) and 'Welfare Hot Buttons: Women, Work, and Social Policy Reform' (University of Toronto Press, 2002, forthcoming) both of which are comparative works on Canada, the U.K. and the U.S.
Sylvia is currently working on a comparative study of social policy in Toronto, Canada, and London, England.  The focus of her London case is the impact of changes by New Labour on local government and social policy related to women's issues.  She is interested in how the creation of an at-large elected mayor and Greater London Assembly has impacted on policy around, for example, women's housing for those leaving shelters and women's safety on public transport.
Sylvia will be in London from 29 July to 2 August, inclusive.  She would like to interview women politicians, as well as experts and activists in the anti-violence, women's shelter, housing, child care, and safety and transport areas.
