Have just seen that you can comment 'on-line' on the future of London Transport via the GLA site. Looks like you have to respond to the strategies that they have decided are important, but there are some places where you can add your own comments. Also looks like the questionnaire is biased towards organisations - but whose to say whether your organisation has hundreds of users who support your comments. Will anything every really change ... At least in the States they had enough unity to start a 'class action' on behalf of minority ethnic users and women users of public transport, as the argument was that as the main users they were discriminated against by the unreliable service. Will any union (which was the co-ordinator in the States) or Law Centre be independent enough to do it here?!! Name: Constantly frustrated and tired dependent user of public transport. Name: Estelle friend City: london,Country: England - THE LONDON ASSOCIATION OF ENTERPRISE AGENCIES LOOKS TO BLACK BUSINESS OWNERS IN LONDON FOR HELP AN INVITATION FOR YOU Research has shown that mentoring is one of the best ways in which to support any business - especially in their start-up stage. This applies even more so to minority owned businesses and especially within the African and Caribbean business communities. The London Association of Enterprise Agencies through the Business Volunteer Mentors Association is looking to increase its Mentors from the African and Caribbean communities. Within the small business arena, African and Caribbean businesses are a fast growing sector. The BVMA recognise the need to supply mentors from the same background and ethnic origin, who can, whilst supplying that expert advice, and mentoring qualities required, also supply, support and empathy with the cultural nuances. With an ever-growing requirement for such a service, the BVMA is working toward increasing its intake of African Caribbean mentors and has set up a series of meetings to attract any successful business person, past or present, who feels they would like to "put back" into the community by contributing their support to a new company requiring that help. Showing their commitment, Sally Agass, Chairperson of the London Association of Enterprise Agencies said "…we are especially keen to ensure that the register reflects the profile of the business community with representation from ethnic and minority sections". Two meetings will be held in March to introduce, and explain mentoring, and of course answer any question relating to the campaign. Anyone interested in more information on the meetings should contact ASAP Communications Limited on Tel: 0207 978 9488 - Fax: 0207 978 9490 Email: info@asapcomms.co.uk or check our website: www.asapcomms.com Press enquiries: pressdesk@asapcomms.co.uk More information on BVMA contact: Peter Ives: BVMA London 07771 642 266 Name: Zebian Nelson-Myrie City: - http://www.asapcomms.com BUSINESS LINK LONDON IN CONJUNCTION WITH CHOICE FM YOU ARE INVITED TO A FREE SERIES OF BUSINESS BREAKFAST MASTERCLASSES After the success of their recent business fair in Wood Green, and the subsequent business fair at White Hart Lane, both specifically targeting minority owned businesses, Business Links London is determined to keep a rapport going with this sector of the business community. I have looked at your website for information for some media studies coursework. I have to produce 6 print adverts for a charity/crisis. I have chosen rape as my topic. I have found your website most interesting-thank you. I think it is disgraceful that women go through so much hardship that is unrecognised by the men who could do something about it-but won't. It is not fair that women suffer while men reap the benefits of our pain, usually only for some material gain eg. the case of Michelle and her ex-husbands' greed for $125,000. Now that is unfair that a man abusing his own blood should then require compensation..is the compensation there to make do for the lost amount of time he could have abused his son? It is pathetic. It is unfair. The men who run this country say there is no problem with gender equality and treatment, but they are men and contradict themselves because they never suffer what we women go through. They are not women. How could they possibly say that they understand. I am disgusted, truly. After a two and a half year court battle I realised that the courts would not protect my son as it was viewed as a "domestic". The only way I could stop the "domestic" sexual abuse continuing was to change my son's and my own names and identities and go underground. After 11 years in hiding, I have been found, and arrested on an extradition warrent. If extradited I face 6 years in prison, huge fines and reparations to my ex husband (who is claiming $125000). My son is now 18 and wants to stay in the UK and I am fighting a slowly losing battle. My appeal against extradition to the Home Office was refused, but I have managed to get my case back before them for reconsideration. I expect their decision in JANUARY. Recently, Baroness Jay, Minister for Women, led an alliance of Labour women against Government plans to promote traditional marriage which would discriminate against single mothers, most of whom are single through no fault of their own. Previously my friends and supporter have lobbied the Home Office with letters and petitions to no avail, so we have decided to lobby the Ministry For Women and ask them to take up my case. It would be far more difficult for the Home Office to ignore another Minister than it is to ignor another petition. Please e mail or post me a letter of support. (Post to: 3 Millards Hill, Welton, Midsomer Norton, Bath, BA3 2BL). Please ask as many of your friends/family/contacts etc. as possible to do the same. When we have a substantial quantity we shall contact the press and publicly present all the letter/email etc to the Minster For Women. Dan Norris, our MP is organising a meeting with other MP's in the House of Parliament for me in early-January and we would like to coordinate our campaign to coincide with that date. If you require more info, or would like a standard letter that my partner has produced, then please e mail me. Since I left Nevada in 1988, I have not been able to see my family, I have lived in exile, I gave up all that I posessed (my ex was given everything in my absence), I gave up my career, my home, my identity, my friends. Now at 53, they want my to take my freedom and to completely ruin me financially. I believe that I have already paid a high enough price for my husbands crime. PLEASE HELP ME. I invite you to be part of the project 'Bringing the Dark into the Light' which is your opportunity to be courageous in creative self expression, feel empowered and have fun with it. Bringing the Dark into the Light is a 'collection' from women who choose to write short stories, poems etc. and illustrations revealing the secrets of their shadier, fantasy side. This 'collection' is to be published on the internet and may also go onto be printed. I've had interest of coverage from several national media when the collection is compiled. I don't have a shadier, fantasy secrets! Consider - smashing up a room, without breaking your nails; P.M.T. that brings out the raw, the brittle, the little girl in me; punching hell out of that git that cut you up at the lights; having your own diet coke man (or woman) to do your bidding all day (and night!); a sexual sanctuary - leave this one up to your imagination etc.... Why do this project? I consider that in our normal lives there are few opportunities to really express this side of our human nature, safely, without repercussion, without criticism. To explore this human way of being as women, to feel empowered by our words and artwork and to know we are definitely not alone, that there are many women whose secrets are imprisoned only in their minds. After all we are all grown up kids, and kids express themselves openly, simply. Acclaimed Documentary Regret to Inform Tells Stories of War through Widows'Eyes at UN Conference Women's Film Festival NEW YORK, NY - "Do you know a widow of war?" That's the question Barbara Sonneborn and Xuan Ngoc Nguyen will be asking the 10,000 delegates to the United Nations Women 2000 Conference (Beijing +5) in New York City from June 5-9, 2000. Both widows of the Vietnam-American War, Sonneborn and Nguyen are at the forefront of a new worldwide movement of war widows who are harnessing the power of the internet to spread their message of peace. On April 30, the women launched the Widows of War Living Memorial www.warwidows.org, which tells the stories of war widows from lands as diverse as Rwanda, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and Guatemala. Now, with women's organizations and representatives from around the world gathering to discuss the status of women five years after the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, a delegation of war widows is traveling to New York to call on other widows to add their stories and voices to their burgeoning network. "This is more than a memorial: it's a living tapestry that weaves together the stories of women whose lives are bound by the knowledge that we have one common enemy - war," says Sonneborn. "The Living Memorial shows that war doesn't end when the bombs stop dropping - it tears our lives apart and its legacy lives on and on." Unlike most memorials, where names and dates are etched in stone, visitors can touch the names and learn about the people behind them through stories, photographs, memorabilia, and audio and video streams. The memorial grew out of Sonneborn's quest to make sense of war. Twenty years after her husband, Jeff Gurvitz, was killed in Vietnam, Sonneborn, an artist from Berkeley, CA, felt compelled to travel to Vietnam to learn about the war that left her a widow. While there, she met war widows from both the north and south of Vietnam. The women were drawn together not only by their stories of war and loss, but by their unshakable conviction that together, they could become a powerful force for peace. The result of Sonneborn's journey was Regret to Inform, a spellbinding Academy Award-nominated film that documents the experiences of widows from all sides of the Vietnam-American War. But the film was just the first step toward the birth of a new movement. In January 2000, Sonneborn, Nguyen and three other widows from the U.S. and Vietnam traveled across the U.S., talking to students, reporters and women's groups, and reaching out to other widows to help them found the Widows of War Living Memorial. The UN Women 2000 conference (also known as Beijing +5) will feature three screenings of Regret to Inform as part of the conference's film festival to showcase international films made by and about women. The screenings will be followed by public forums that explore the deeper questions about war raised by the film. We have a women's library and infoshop, host all sorts of meetings, and do a cheap vegan cafe every Saturday night (from 7pm, meals from £1.50, women only). The address is 402 Queensbridge Road, Dalston E8 (phone 0771 4527707) and we are having a benefit party (women only) on March 25th - all women welcome!!! Entry is by a minimum donation of £2, female DJ's will play techno, drum & bass and trance for as long as the women keep dancing..... The party us from 10pm but as its a Saturday there is of course a cafe from 7pm. See you there! Also we are always on the look out for more women to help us make stuff happen so please be in touch with any ideas you might have, or just spare time/books/kids clothes/seeds for the garden, etc etc.... The international feminist magazine LOLApress (printed both in English and Spanish)is looking for support in the UK. The mag comes out three times a year and the three editorial offices (located in Uruguay, Germany and South Africa)take it in turns to get the issues together. It is a very sophisticated publication containing well researched out-of-the-ordinary articles from an interesting, global perspective They'd like to be in touch with feminist organisations, who could offer information and contributions. They also (who would have guessed!) need subscribers! I have got a limited amount of spare sample issues (first come, first serve) to give away, if you are interested. Contact me with any suggestions or queries. Otherwise have a look at their webpage and get in touch with LOLApress directly. www.lolapres.org www.chaque.apc.org/lola e-mail: LOLApress@ipn-b.de It is a worthwhile read!! The resulting report will be presented to Tessa Jowell MP,the Minister for Women. If you work with survivors of domestic violence or are a survivor yourself then please contact me and find out how to register to take part. Deborah Hart through microsyster London , England <dath@deborahhart.totalserve.co.uk> - Hello - Im katherine and I dont live in London but in Bristol. However I am a Woman Adviser who does just that for Bristol City Council - I advise them about women's equality issues . So it's nice to network with other women to see what you do over there and vice versa. Trouble is I'm not very computer literate yet and so I may not be able to access your information very well. So this is my initial contact. Attacks on lone parents (mainly women), cut backs and budget restrictions in health and education, patronising paternalism of the New Deal. What's going on? Grace Firestone not sure how I found out about this, searching the web is a nightmare London, <sorry - logging on at work!!> ditto - Congratulations on the guest book. Looking forward to thrills with women in london. women@roomnchp colleague london, england - regarding the mayor for london and of course the new GLA it is about time they mentioned equalities and after a lot of pressure it has been as usual an add on but never mund do not give up I will keep fighting the good fight and hopefully they will provide a working panel with a spokesperson for women!!
