Name of Group: Polari
Group Purpose: Polari raises awareness about older lesbians and gay men, and works nationally to get their voices heard by services used by older people (including housing, social care, health, community safety) and by planners and commissioners.
  • Currently we are funded by the Community Fund, Bridge House Trust and City Parochial Foundation for the Polari in Partnership Project: we convene groups of lesbians and gay men over 55 in Hackney, Kingston and Westminster who are influencing local services in these boroughs.  We hope this work can later become a model for lesbian and gay friendly changes to services across the country.
  • Our groups are mixed (lesbians and gay men) and in order to include the needs and opinions of older lesbians who prefer to be in women-only groups we maintain links with the Older Lesbian Network, the AGLOW Older Lesbian Project and other lesbian groups.  Contact us to get involved locally, or to receive our free newsletter wherever you live.
  • Polari was originally set up with a housing focus, but now we work strategically for lesbian and gay friendly changes to a variety of services that older people use.  Please note that while we respond to requests for information, we do not offer advice or casework services, or provide housing.
