Abused women who kill
consultation meeting on Law Commission options
on Partial Defences to Murder

ROW are hosting a major consultation meeting with the Law Commission
Thursday 11th December from 9.30am to 1pm
Britannia Conference Centre, Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JP

The Law Commission, an independent body which recommends reform of the law to the Government, has published a consultation paper on Partial Defences to Murder.  They are seeking views on how the law in this area should be reformed.  This may have a major impact on the treatment of abused women who kill in the future.

The meeting is intended to provide an opportunity for organisations working with survivors of domestic violence, either directly or indirectly, to influence the recommendations the Commission make on this essential issue.

The morning will feature the following speakers:
  • Harriet Harman QC MP, the Solicitor General
  • Hannana Siddiqui, Southall Black Sisters
  • Harriet Wistrich, Justice for Women
  • His Honour Judge Alan Wilkie QC, the Law Commissioner responsible for criminal law
  • Jayne Astley, lawyer at the Law Commission whose recent work has focussed on abused women who kill (Part X of the consultation paper)
This is a unique opportunity to participate in the reformulation of the law relating to survivors of domestic violence who kill.

We want as many voices as possible to be heard of survivors of domestic violence, their representatives, and other colleagues with relevant experiences.

The morning’s findings will be collated into a report to be presented to the Law Commission as part of their consultation process.  You can download a copy of the consultation paper, or the shorter summary paper, from http://www.lawcom.gov.uk/231.htm#cp173 or should you have difficulties accessing this call 020 7453 1288 to request a copy of the summary paper.

Places are limited, so if you'd like to come please let us know as soon as possible.  If you have any questions about this event, or would like to confirm your place, please contact Bethan Rigby at Rights of Women on 020 7251 6575/6 or at info@row.org.uk
