The Rights of Women Bulletin 
Human Rights Issue 

The Rights of Women Bulletin is back.  After three years absence, the Summer 2001 edition will be available at the beginning of June.  The Bulletin is Rights of Women’s bi annual publication which is a forum for discussing women’s relationship to the law and aims to provide information on women’s position within the legal system.  This edition contains the following articles:

  • An sight into the Human Rights Act and its possible implications;
  • An account of the Rights of Women 25th Anniversary Conference "Women’s Rights are Human Rights";
  • An analysis of the international framework for lobbying on women’s rights as provided by the United Nations Women’s Convention and the UK Government’s response;
  • Information about international human rights instruments, their implementation, and the implication of domestic immigration law on victims of domestic violence;
  • Interview with Rebecca Gomperts, the inspiration behind "Women on Waves", a project involving a Dutch ship anchored outside territorial waters, which will provide reproductive health services for women in countries where abortion is illegal;
  • Recent reforms of the Sexual Offences Laws and questions whether the reforms go far enough in ensuring that the perpetrators of violence are brought to justice and women are protected from repeat victimisation;
  • Report on the work of the Best Interests Campaign which works in coalition with other organisations and individuals to campaign for the safety of women and children when they are separated from violent partners;
  • Background information and an update on the progress of the Rights of Women Domestic Violence DIY Injunction Handbook;
  • An outline of the proposals for action on equality as contained in the Equal Opportunities Commission’s manifesto for a new Government;
  • Fawcett Society, provides an analysis of the voting intentions of women and the difference this makes to the outcome of elections; and
  • Book review:  F. E. Raitt and M. S. Zeeyk’s book The Implicit Relation of Psychology and Law: Women and Syndrome Evidence which explores the role of psychological syndromes in the criminal courts of the UK and USA.
