Meeting to find out and explore how the Internet
is and can be used to promote women's groups

2nd November 1999 - 1.15pm to 4.45pm - Resource Centre Holloway Road, N7

Recent surveys have shown that more and more women are now happy to be 'on-line'.   But usually this is reported to be about women using the Internet for 'on line shopping' and other such 'female' interests.

However, there are examples of women using the Internet to positively promote the work of women and women's groups.   In many cases this is by women that are at a technological disadvantage.   For instance, women in 'developing' countries have been enthusiastic users of the Internet to promote their work as well as exploit the technology as an organisational tool.   Examples range from women workers organising in the Philippines in the 80s to 'Women's Net' in South Africa, set up and run with Government support.

It could be said that women's groups in this country are lagging behind in exploiting this technology, as it does offer groups the chance of 'self publishing'.   But can this be a positive way of directly publicising the diverse work of women's groups?

This meeting will give women's groups the opportunity to find out about the work of some women's groups in other parts of the world, as well as recent developments here.   Participants in the meeting will include:

  • Women from GreenNet who will talk about their work with the Beijing Plus Five Platform for Action Review as part of the APC Women's Networking Support Programme, the Women Action 2000 Network and with Women's Net South Africa
  • Black Women in the Arts who are launching a web site for Black Women and Women's Organisations called 'Black Women'
