18th to 21st May 2000

Free event in Old Spitalfields Market, London E1 on Friday 19th May for businesses and charities on how to save money and resources by preventing waste.  Also, awards for food businesses from Mayor of Tower Hamlest.  Schedules are included below.

The workshops will be held over lunch time so that as many people as possible can attend.  The venue is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs.  An interpreter (Bengali/English) will be available.

There will be free entry to a raffle to win two refurbished computers (Win 95, MS Office), donated by North London ITEC and Recycle IT - thank you North London ITEC and Recycle IT!

There will also be free energy saving lightbulbs for 'those who qualify' which I think means in receipt of benefit or over 60 (so bring your granny and a benefit book!)

  • FRIDAY 19th MAY - MONEY AND RESOURCE SAVING TIPS
       FOR BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS
    • 11.00-11.30am : Garry Highton : Thames Water - Cutting water use for businesses
      Reduce water consumption and associated costs.

    • 11.30-12.30pm : Craig Tidy : Tidy Britain Group - Eco schools and Tidy Business Standards
      Cor, look at what that school's doing!  Kids are great enthusiasts where the environment is concerned.  And they get up to some wonderful waste preventing activities!  Find out what's going on around the country in waste prevention education.  Plus info on business standards and waste prevention.

      FREE workshop for charities and voluntary organisations who want help with practical waste saving ideas.  Saving resources can help your organisation save ££££££'s

      Can THREe save you money by reducing your spending on materials or waste disposal?  Come along to find out more.  To register for THREe is FREE!  So you've nothing to lose and lots to gain!

    • 1.30pm-2pm : Businesses banking on success
      Reduce, Reuse, Recycle saves money and natural resources.  Why did you never think of it before?  All that money down the drain!  And a good PR opportunity missed too!  Having environmental policies and practice can be a great marketing tool!  Come along and find out more from the experts.

      A waste prevention initiative for city firms plus tips on saving money and resources for small and medium size enterprises in London.

    • 2pm-3pm : Awards for waste minimisation in leisure and food
      The Mayor of Tower Hamlet - Denise Jones - presents awards to small food organisations, and restaurants in Tower Hamlets, who have succeeded in slimming their bins.
    • Vanessa Scott of Strettons, award winning East Anglian hotel, discusses how waste minimisation has saved her ££££'s and proved popular with customers.  For restaurants, caterers, food producers, hotels, B&B's.
      If they can do it, so can you. Pick up some tips from those in the know.
      That makes sense!
  • SUNDAY 21st MAY : WORKSHOPS, ENTERTAINMENTS, STALLS, DISPLAYS
       AND LOTS, LOTS MORE!

    • 11.00 : Live Life! Loads of stalls with waste saving ideas, services and products.
      WEN raffle.  Super prizes.  Join WEN on the day and get 5 free entries to the raffle - what a winner!
      Life Cycle Analysis: Displays looking at waste reduction at all stages in our life cycle - real nappies, an educational compost loo, and natural death.

    • 12.00-12.45pm : Totem Pole
      Ongoing arts workshop. Decorate a simple mask and write on one waste preventing action that you feel you can do on a regular basis. Then add it to our totem pole and watch the people tree grow!

    • 12.00-12.45pm : Food growing for everyone
      Workshop for all ages and enthusiasms - sowing seeds in reused containers. The benefits of home grown grub!  Give it a go!  (workshop will also run later on in the afternoon 2.45-3.15pm)

    • 12.45-1.30pm : Fresh from the heap - wiggly wormeries and composting
      Tower Hamlets very own Manda Helal on the wonders of composting.  Demonstration wormery for kids of all ages to squirm and smile at.

    • 1.30-2.00pm : Entertainment

    • 2.00-2.45pm : Jean Lambert Green MEP will answer your questions
      Want to find out what an MEP does?  Activist with a burning question to ask? Want to get your voice heard?  Curious to find out what the EU has got to do with you?  Now's your chance to ask the lady in the know.

    • 2.45-3.15pm : Entertainment

    • 3.15-4.00pm Waste and Health
      Long time campaigner Helen Lynn fills in the gap between chemicals, waste and health.  How packaging can come back to haunt you!  Beware the fat, full waste bin - slim it to help secure a healthier future.

    • 4.00-4.30pm : Toxic Shock
      Women face the threat of illness from the contents of their sanitary wear.  So what alternatives are there?  GM in tampons?  Bal spills the genes on the current lack of choice in menstrual wear - what are we putting into our bodies?  Who knows?  And who cares? WEN does!

    • 4.30-5.20pm : Entertainment

    • 5.20pm    :  Draw raffle
