Women's Link is the charity providing assistance to (mainly) women in a housing crisis. Established in 1922 to assist those on low incomes who came to London for work, we have been going & growing ever since. We just received the brilliant news that The National Lottery Charities Board will award Women's Link with a two-year grant of £53,718 towards our housing advisory service! No small feat when you bear in mind the competitive nature of securing Lottery funding. Indeed, Halifax plc successfully raised a total of £2167.36 in a 1998 fundraising campaign by selling Women's Link badges to the public. Camden, Kentish Town, Enfield & Palmers Green were some of the branches involved. These fundraising successes and others do show that our vital services towards solving homelessness are recognised. Our Patrons are the author Doris Lessing, The Rt. Hon. Betty Boothroyd MP and The Most Rev. Desmond Tutu DD FKC. The late Reverend Lord Soper who passed away in January 1999 was also a Patron of Women's Link. He is very much missed. Although a London based charity, enquiries do come from all over the globe (Emails from Romania & Rotterdam and letters from Jamaica & Java!). 'Hostels in London' is endorsed for a second year by Eastenders star Patsy Palmer who cares deeply about issues surrounding homelessness. This edition of 'Hostels in London' will be even more vital than previous ones. The guide is free to clients and £2.00 to organisations or employed persons. With the millennium less than five months away, more young people are streaming into the capital. To cope with this increased demand, the print run has gone from 2000 to 3000 copies this year. Success in raising funds for this edition enabled us 'go colour' with the front cover for the first time!
