Child and Women Abuse Studies Unit : Short Courses in 2006

From February 2006 the Department of Applied Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit, will run a series of short courses on violence against women and children. They can be taken singly or as part of a broader study programme.

These courses are aimed at professionals working in or developing specialist services or policy in the fields of violence against women and/or child abuse, as well as other professionals and students with an interest in developing their knowledge or entering a career in this field/sector.

Candidates who successfully complete any of the Short Courses will be offered credits towards either a:

  • Postgraduate certificate, or
  • Masters degree

Violence Against Women: issues, research and policy
Led by Professor Liz Kelly

This is an introductory course that will introduce students to research on the prevalence, contexts and consequences of a range of forms of violence. By the end of this course you will be able to critically assess explanatory frameworks and contemporary policy.

Content and Structure:

The course will be delivered over 5 days. During the first 2 days students will focus on critical analysis of theories, definitions and research methods, including a historical overview. More detailed attention will then be paid to:

  • Intimate partner violence
  • Rape and sexual assault
  • Harmful traditional practices e.g. female genital mutilation, honour crimes
  • Sexual exploitation including the sex industry, prostitution and trafficking

Sexual exploitation of children and young people
Led by Dr. Paula Skidmore

A course that is designed to extend your knowledge base on sexual exploitation of children and young people. Students will examine examples of good practice in working with children and young people. Course content will concentrate on trafficking, prostitution and pornography.

Content and Structure:

Delivered over 5 days, the course will cover:

  • Definitions and prevalence
  • Historical continuities
  • Policy and legislation
  • Intervention and protection
  • Impacts on the child/young person
  • Managing perpetrators

FEE:
£400 per short course (If successfully completed and taken as a credit towards a masters or post graduate certificate, this will be deducted from the overall course fee.)
