Eaves : Female Genital Mutilation An Introduction

Thursday 8th February 2007 from 9.45 - 16.00 in London

This seminar is brought to you by The Lilith Project in conjunction with FORWARD, Bridge House Trust, Asylum Aid, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London Councils.

6,500 girls are at risk of Female Genital Mutilation every year in the UK, a practice in which the female genital organs are purposely cut, stretched, burned or otherwise damaged. Its effects can far reaching, and yet many frontline workers do not have a full understanding of this important issue. This one day seminar will explore the issue of FGM from all perspectives, including:

  • Supporting women who have undergone FGM
  • Preventative education
  • Campaigning and lobbying
  • Medical and midwifery implications
  • Legal perspectives

The highly skilled specialist speakers will locate FGM in the spectrum of violence against women, seek solutions to protect girls and women, and disseminate best practice for practitioners supporting women who have undergone FGM. This is an essential event for:

  • Women's organisations
  • Groups working with BME communities
  • Groups working with refugees and women seeking asylum
  • Healthcare practitioners
  • Social workers
  • Police
  • Researchers and policy makers
  • Child protection workers
