Working Effectively with Drugs and Alcohol: Practical Guidance for Domestic Violence Managers

Course Description
  • The first day of the course will provide basic training on drugs/alcohol, the links to domestic violence and what it means to work with survivors with additional drug or alcohol needs. Other topics covered include: the legal implications and policy issues surrounding drugs, practical skills to challenge difficult behaviour and the use of a common assessment tool. Facilitators will work with participants to agree a task and timeframe for implementation to take back to their agency and complete in preparation for the second session.
  • The second day workshop will be tailored to respond to the specific needs of participants. It will aim to seek solutions to problems encountered in implementing the task, provide further skills as identified by participants, and allow for indepth discussion with professionals in the field who have successfully made sustained change within their organisations.
  • One to one telephone advice will be available to participants in between the two sessions in order to support the change process within your agency
  • Who Should Attend?
    Senior project workers, team leaders, deputy and senior managers and service directors working within domestic violence services. Please note that the training is not suitable for regular, front line staff.

    Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training for domestic violence workers

    Course Description
  • Participants will explore the behaviours which constitute domestic violence and the ways in which substances are used by both survivor and perpetrator. The complexities leaving violent relationships will also be covered alongside legal and child protection issues. Participants will also learn practical examples of safety planning, accessing domestic violence services and ideas for more integrated partnership working.
  • Learning Objectives
       * To understand the different components of domestic violence and its myths, realities and prevalence
       * To learn the legal issues for consideration as a practitioner
       * To learn appropriate ways to ask about domestic violence and how to prepare a safety plan
       * To understand how to access domestic violence services and examples of effective partnership work
  • Who Should Attend?
    Priority will be given to staff from front line drug and alcohol agencies who wish to improve their response to clients who may be experiencing domestic violence. Non-specialist staff are advised to attend the course 'The links between domestic violence and substance misuse" which specifically designed for professionals who work in more generic fields and may be better suited to your needs.

  • Led by Davina James-Hanman of the greater London Domestic Violence Project, this workshop is for drug, alcohol and domestic violence workers who wish to develop their skills in safety planning for women who are experiencing domestic violence and problematic substance use.
  • Participants should have attended a basic awareness training in either domestic violence or drugs and alcohol.
