GLDVP Stella Project : Domestic violence and substance misuse: the experiences of women from Black and minority ethnic communities

Course Description:
This training has been designed to help participants to understand and gain skills to work effectively with women from Black and ethnic minority communities who present with domestic violence and substance misuse. Participants will also explore the need to work at community level with effective screening and signposting on to relevant services.
Learning Objectives:
- To recognise the impact cultural issues have on women from Black and minority ethnic communities presenting with domestic violence and substance misuse
- To explore the difficulties and barriers to women disclosing and learning how and where women disclose
- To recognise that black and minority ethnic communities are not homogenous, and their different experiences with reference to case studies
- To describe strategies and skills appropriate to addressing presenting needs relating to domestic violence and substance misuse
- Explore opportunities for partnership working and learn of the specialist services available for BME women and children in London
This course will help develop the skills and knowledge to support the following DANOS units:
AA4 Promote people's equality, diversity and rights
AA6 Promote choice, wellbeing and the protection of all individuals
AB4 Contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse
AB8 Contribute to assessing and act upon risk of danger, harm and abuse
AC1 Reflect on and develop your practic

AG3 Assist in the transfer of individuals between agencies and services
Who Should Attend?
This course is open to workers from across the domestic violence, drug and alcohol sectors. This course will not cover basic domestic violence awareness.
