Hillcroft College : Skills for Further & Higher Study - Access To Higher Education

  • 2 terms full-time:
  • Two starting points in the year: 25 September or 8 January

Description

This is a modular, combined studies programme at level 3 which will help you gain confidence and prepare for study at a higher level, either on a vocational course or a university degree course. The course is structured to respond to the students' own needs and starting points.   The course is delivered over 24 weeks with entry points in September or January. The programme is validated by the Open College Network London Region (OCNLR), and leads to an award - the Access to Higher Education Certificate. You will gain a certificate named according to the pathway that you take, which will be one of the following:

  1. Access to Health Studies and Social Science
  2. Access to Social Science and Humanities
  3. Access to Combined Studies.

The number of pathway options in the year will depend on the number of students who enrol for the programme. Possible module options are shown below. Learning Skills is compulsory and students would then choose 3 other modules

  1. Access to Health Studies and Social Science: Learning Skills, Understanding Health, Behavioural Biology, Human Biology, Sociology, Social Psychology, Social Policy
  2. Access to Social Science and Humanities: Learning Skills, Society and the Individual, Sociology, Social Psychology, History, Literature: Prose & Poetry, Visual Studies, Computing & Visual Design
  3. Access to Combined Studies: Learning Skills, Understanding Health, Behavioural Biology, Human Biology, Sociology, Social Psychology, Social Policy, Society and the Individual, History, Literature: Prose & Poetry, Visual Studies, Computing and Visual Design, Theory and Practice of Computing, Business Studies, Human Capital & the Effective Organisation, Financial Management

To gain the Access Certificate you will combine study skills with the study of three academic subjects. All students will be offered an initial assessment in maths, English and IT, and teaching in these subjects is a compulsory part of the course. You will also be part of a tutorial group and have regular one-to-one tutorials.

  • Who is the course for?
    Women over the age of 19 who want to discover their capabilities for study at university level in a range of subject disciplines.
  • What previous knowledge/skills required
    No formal educational qualifications are required. We are interested in your desire to learn and enthusiasm for academic study. Applicants are invited to an interview to discuss whether the course is right for you. You will need to demonstrate that you can read, write and understand English at a level close to, or above, Level 2)
  • Assessment and qualification:
    OCNLR Access Certificate in Higher Education
  • What kind of support is available?
    There is a strong emphasis on support for the individual learner, both within the subject modules and in an extensive programme of additional learning support. In particular we provide assessments and specialist support for students with dyslexia and speakers of English as an additional language.
  • Funding your Access course
    You can apply for a residential college bursary, which will pay for your course fees, accommodation and meals, as well as giving you a small amount of money to pay for other expenses including course books.
