Courses and Training

Women's Library : A Life of One’s Own: Independence and Identity in the 1920s and 1930s

  • 6 Week Literature Course
  • Wednesday 31st October – Wednesday 5th December 2007
  • 6.30 – 8pm
  • £55/£45 concessions
  • The decision to have 'a life of one's own, not an existence doled out to you by others', was one of the key themes of the inter-war years, expressed as vehemently in the literature of the period as by women themselves.

This six week course will examine fiction such as Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner, The Daughters of the Late Colonel by Katherine Mansfield, All Passion Spent by Vita Sackville-West, and The New House by Lettice Cooper; also Virginia Woolf's A Room of One Own, and a discussion of art deco designer Clarice Cliff, whose life and work reflected the quest for individuality.

It is led by writer and lecturer, Lynn Knight, author of the biography, Clarice Cliff.
