WRC Training Calendar for the Women's Voluntary and Community Sector
WRC Policy Team has developed a range of media and policy capacity building training events for the women working in the voluntary and community sector. The initiative for this work has come out of the WRC Policy Forum, which has been working with WRC to explore what are the key issues impacting upon the women's sector. This training is free for WRC members.

WRC Introductory Media Training
Thursday, 25th November, 2004 and Tuesday, 1st February, 2004.
A one-day introductory training for women working in the voluntary and community sector who have little or no experience of the media. Facilitated by two experienced journalists from the Mediawise Trust, we have run this day twice now with excellent feedback. This day can be done in conjunction with the advanced day or alone.
This training will cover:
- How the media works
- How to make the media work for you
- Basic skills in interviewing and writing press releases
- How to create a campaign
- How to get your side of the story across
- How to get stories about issues impacting on women into the news
WRC Advanced Media Training on Interviewing Techniques
Tuesday, 30th November 2004
This one-day training is for women working in the voluntary and community sector who are interested in interviewing. Women wishing to book on this course must have some knowledge or experience of the media, or have completed the WRC Introductory Media Training. The day is facilitated by an experienced journalist from the MediaWise Trust.
This training will cover:
- How to get an interview
- Interview preparation
- Getting the most out of your interview
- Practical, on-camera experience, with feedback
- How to follow up your interview.
What is public policy?:
An introduction for the women's voluntary and community sector
Monday, 13th December 2004
This one-day training is for women working in the voluntary and community sector who have little or no experience of working with policy. It will provide a basic overview of what policy is, and how to lobby and input into policy.
This training will cover:
- What is policy and lobbying
- Stories of success - case studies from a range of groups who have impacted upon public policy, in a range of ways
- How to build a policy campaign on a shoestring
- Using the media
- Equality proofing your work
- Feeding into consultations
WRC Advanced Media Training on Building a Media Campaign
Wednesday, 9th February, 2005
This training day is for women working in the voluntary and community sector who are interested in building a media campaign. Women wishing to book on this course must have some knowledge or experience of the media, or have completed the WRC Introductory Media Training. The day is facilitated by an experienced journalist from the MediaWise Trust.
This training will cover:
- The difference between a story and a campaign
- The steps involved in building a campaign
- Case studies of successful women's groups' media campaigns
- How to use your resources most effectively
- How to build a campaign on unpopular issues
- How to follow up a campaign
Using United Nations Instruments Training
February 2005 (tbc)
A one-day introductory training for women working in the voluntary and community sector on the United Nations instruments, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA).
This training will cover:
- What are the CEDAW and the Optional Protocol
- What is the BPfA
- How CEDAW, the Optional Protocol and the BPfA can be used by women's organisations
Making a Policy Impact at Local and Regional Levels
11 April 2005
This is a more specific training day for women working in the voluntary and community sector who have some experience of policy, and who want to learn more about how your organisation can impact upon public policy development at local and regional levels.
This training will cover:
- Key local and regional bodies
- Stories of success - case studies of groups who have impacted upon public policy at local and regional levels, in a range of ways
- How to build a policy campaign at a local or regional level
- Using the media locally
- Equality proofing your work
Costs
Free if you are a WRC member, though you have to send in a £20 deposit cheque, which is refundable on the day of the training
If you are a non-WRC member, payment is asked for on a sliding scale, according to income.
- £20 - under £50, 000
- £25 - between £50,000 - £100,00
- £30 - between £100,000 - £250,000
- £40 - over £250,000
