Thursday 4th January & Friday 5th January 2007 - Counselling Skills for Front Line Professionals


This two-day CSCT counselling skills course aims to increase the confidence and ability of front line workers to communicate effectively and appropriately with clients. Participants will gain practical experience of using counselling skills and an opportunity to reflect and build on their current communication skills. The course will cover:
  • Listening and communication skills (including non-verbal communication)
  • The differences between providing counselling and using counselling skills
  • The importance of establishing appropriate boundaries
  • Asking appropriate and helpful questions
  • Identifying and overcoming barriers to good communication
  • The impact of self-awareness in communication (including the Johari Window)
  • Client centred principles (The Core Conditions for client work)
  • Ethical interaction with clients
  • Conflict Resolution
  • No previous experience is required for this course. Participants will receive a certificate

Tuesday 16th & Wednesday 17th January 2007 - Domestic Violence Awareness training


The two-day course is aimed at all staff working in agencies who work with women and children experiencing domestic violence and will cover the following issues:
  • definitions and statistics
  • different forms of domestic violence and their impact upon women
  • children's experiences of domestic violence (brief overview)
  • Reasons why clients remain in or return to violent relationships
  • Specific factors affecting particular client groups
    • older clients
    • lesbian, gay and bisexual clients
    • clients with disabilities
    • clients with substance misuse problems
    • black and minority ethnic clients
  • Process of help seeking model
  • Sources of help/making appropriate referrals
  • Asking questions and good practice responses to disclosure
  • Confidentiality and documentation
  • Safety strategies

Wed 24th January & Thursday 25th January 2007- Housing and Legal Options for Women experiencing Domestic Violence


The two-day course is suitable for any professional wishing to gain further understanding of the legal and housing options available to women experiencing domestic violence.

The course will cover the following issues:

  • Advantages and Disadvantages of different housing options
  • Occupancy right for clients whose relationships have broken down due to
  • domestic violence
  • Civil Partnership Act
  • Civil law injunctions (non-molestation orders and occupation orders)
  • Protection From Harassment Act
  • Domestic Violence. Crime and Victims Act
  • The criminal justice system
  • Temporary and long term housing options
  • Housing Legislation
  • Interviewing Skills

NB all applicants should have previous training in domestic violence awareness.

Monday 2nd April 2007 - Children and Domestic Violence


The course is aimed at all staff working in agencies who work with women and children experiencing domestic violence and will cover the following issues:
  • ways in which children experience domestic violence
  • impact of domestic violence on children
  • child protection issues
  • issues related to residency and contact
  • prevention work
  • sources of help and good practice

Please note you need to have attended the Domestic Violence Awareness Training in order to attend this course.
