Alternative Arts - SPIT LIT Festival 2005

Readings, Talks, Discussions, Performances and Workshops exploring contemporary issues and ideas with an international line-up of novelists, journalists, broadcasters, poets, playwrights, comics, musicians and artists.

Programme Outline

  • The Festival is launched on 3rd March at 6.30pm with the opening of Festival Exhibition of women photographers and the following evening is a mix of discusion and music.
  • Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th celebrates independent publishing at the Oh! Centre with the Brady Centre hosting Bengali Bookfair and Women's Celebration.
  • Monday 7th focuses on Black Women's writing and on Tuesday 8th - International Women's Day - buffet lunch with guest speaker Nawal El Sadawi at Toynbee Hall and in the evening GENDERQUAKE and Hagsharlotsheroines followed by Electric Landladies.
  • On Wednesday 9th Sable Lit Mag and Spit Stories and Thursday 10th features a discussion on "Freedom of Expression – where do you draw the line?" with Yasmin Alibhai Brown
  • Friday 11th features more fiction discusion followed by poetry preformance.
  • Saturday 12th features the Spit Lit debate "Saving The Planet or Doom-mongering?" followed by Asian women writers and in the evening the Spit Lit Comedy Night.
  • A whole programme of writing workshops will be held at The Women's Library,
