Britain grows the best apples in the world and on Spitalfields City Farm we will be celebrating with a wide variety of English apples to taste and buy, Apple Games such as apple bobbing and joining in the Longest Peel Competition. There will also be apple cookery and apple products such as juices, chutney, jellies, ice-cream, cakes and bread, and apple arts and crafts. We will be holding educational workshops for schools, story-telling in the Wild Life Garden and laying an apple trail with pictures and poems. Our aim is to encourage healthy eating and environmental awareness.

Apple Day is an annual festival of apples, orchards and local distinctiveness initiated by Common Ground and celebrated every year by people organising hundreds of local events. In Britain over 2 000 varieties of apple have been bred over the years, often taking their names from the particular places they have been grown eg Cornish Gilliflower or Devonshire Quarrenden, and in London there are records of varieties grown by market gardeners eg Scarlet Pearmain and Storey's Seedling.

Orchards are being lost at an alarming rate and with them our culture is diminished as varieties of apple disappear and we lose the recipes, cider, songs and stories and knowledge about growing. Apple Day events foster interest in apples and there is currently an upsurge in making cider, apple juices and other products. New orchards are now being planted and artisan producers are helping to sustain our landscapes and traditions.

Everyone can join in Apple Day and learn about the many different varieties of apples that are grown in Britain and play apple games and participate in apple competitions.

Apple Day on Spitalfields City Farm is taking place in the Spitalfields Green Quarter.
