Bird's Eye View : Film Festival Part III - Special Screening: Martyr Street and Opening Night

  • Friday 15th September 2006 at 6.30pm
  • Opening Party follows in the ICA Bar

MARTYR STREET (UK Premiere)
dir. Shelley Saywell 90' Canada, 2006
Winner of Best Canadian Feature (Hot Docs 2006)

Martyr Street is the follow up film to Saywell's Oscar short-listed A Child's Century of War. Winding through Hebron in the West Bank, Martyr Street was once a bustling Palestinian market, and one of the most dangerous streets in the world.

Five years later the stories of the children continue as Martyr Street has become nearly deserted; 'cleansed” of most of its Palestinian population.

The resulting film Martyr Street explores the roots of violence on the street named for its dead.

Featuring the children as they grow older, and including the adults in their lives; the soldiers, the teachers, the fanatics and the fatalists – each claiming huge stakes that are both incompatible and impassioned.

Martyr Street is a painful portrait of the children of both religions and the adults who teach them to hate, and a powerful exploration of the roots of violence on a street named for its dead.

OPENING NIGHT

The Festival will be opened by Amma Asante winner of the London Film Festival, UK Film Talent Award and the BAFTA Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement.
