Greater London Domestic Violence Project : Conference

A bitter pill to swallow
Untangling perceptions of domestic violence, substance use and mental distress

27th and 28th October 2005 from 9.30am – 4.30pm
Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL

The Greater London Domestic Violence Project's conference will allow a wide variety of service providers to explore and understand the links between domestic violence, substance use and mental health issues.

The conference aims to

  1. provide practical examples of good practice in joint work in the areas of domestic violence, substance use and mental health
  2. present up to date research and policy innovations in the interconnected areas of domestic violence, substance use and mental health
  3. discuss a human rights framework for the provision of services to women with more complex needs

Day one: 27th October - content includes:

  • The impact of domestic violence on the retention and completion of substance misuse treatment - Dr Sarah Galvani, Lecturer in Social Work, University of Birmingham
  • The prevalence and difficulties of working across the dual issues of domestic violence and substance use - Dr Cathy Humphreys, School of Health and Social Studies University of Warwick
  • Domestic Violence, Drugs, Alcohol and Mental Health: Issues for the criminal justice system - Luci Russell, SmartJustice for Women
Workshops:
  1. Safe messages for perpetrators in drug and alcohol treatment settings
  2. Opening Doors: providing domestic violence services for drug and alcohol using women
  3. Understanding domestic violence in the context of sex work and substances
  4. Looking forward locally: how to bring local services together for effective practice
  5. Domestic violence as a treatment issue: providing services and support within a drug and alcohol agency
  6. Working with children who have experienced domestic violence and substance misuse.

  3. Supporting women with mental health problems (for domestic violence workers)
  4. Supporting women experiencing domestic violence (for mental health workers)
  5. Understanding diagnosis and medication / use of prescription medication by survivors of domestic violence
