Refuge : 5th Annual Conference - Thursday 29th November 2007

Preventing Domestic Violence: Challenging Public Attitudes and Changing Behaviour

This year’s important conference will examine the progress being made nationally and locally in tackling domestic violence through presentations from those working in education, building partnerships, the community, local government and the media. The conference will set out the latest policy developments, and explore effective methods of preventing domestic violence by challenging and changing public attitudes and behaviour.

Key speakers include:

  • Rt. Hon Harriet Harman QC MP , Minister for Women and Secretary of State for Equality
  • Sandra Horley OBE, Chief Executive of Refuge
  • Brian Moore, Deputy Chief Constable, Surrey Police and ACPO lead on Domestic Violence
  • Steve Sinnott, General Secretary, National Union of Teachers
  • Councillor Ann Lucas, Safer Communities Board – Domestic Violence Lead, Local Government Association

The conference will also provide an opportunity to hear the findings from the WOMANKIND Worldwide programme, “Challenging Violence, Changing Lives”. As well as revealing the prevalence of violence against women in schools and attitudes and beliefs that support violence; this research will have important implications for policy and practice.

Attendees for this conference so far include: Domestic Violence Co-ordinators, Children’s Services Managers, Witness Managers, Housing Association representatives and other key representatives from local authorities, education and police.

Last year there were over 150 attendees at the conference. Make sure you secure your place now at this important event.
