WAFE : Seminar on the occasion of International Women’s Day
Women’s Key Role in Struggle Against Islamic Fundamentalism
Islamic fundamentalism which emerged with the mullahs coming to power in Iran has now turned into the main threat to peace and democracy in the world. This ominous phenomenon is not only a matter of concern for Muslim nations, the Middle East and in particular Iraq, it is also threatening the whole of Europe.
Misogyny forms the basis for fundamentalism and its main driving force. Therefore, the achievements of equality movement are the target of its aggression. In this light, the struggle for peace and democracy is entwined with the struggle for equality more than any other time. This offers a unique opportunity for women.
The brutal suppression of and discrimination against women as well as their dreadful plight under Islamic fundamentalism in Muslim countries are matters that the international movement for equality cannot ignore.
What is the solution?
Women's International Federation Against Fundamentalism and for Equality (WAFE) believes that active and equal participation of women in political leadership is within reach. Twenty eight years of resistance by Iranian women against fundamentalism ruling Iran and the key role of the women in leadership of the resistance provide good examples.
WAFE has organized a seminar entitled “Women’s Key Role in Struggle Against Fundamentalism” on March 3, 2007 in Paris, to mark International Women’s Day to address these issues. Equality movement activists from various Islamic countries including Iraq and Lebanon are invited to address this issue from their own perspectives.
We would like to invite women’s rights activists and organizations to take part in this seminar.
