European Social Forum Preparatory Meeting
Saturday 3rd July 2004 from 2.30 to 5.30 pm
Room H216, Connaught House, London School of Economics (LSE), Aldwych, London, WC2
Reminder:
The National Alliance of Women's Organisations (NAWO), in partnership with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and supported by the UK Asian Women's Conference (UKAWC) invite you to come to the LSE on Saturday 3rd July, 2.30-5.30 pm, to learn more about and consider taking part in the European Social Forum (ESF) that will take place in London October 14th –17th 2004. You will also hear about the World Social Forum (WSF) Movement, and have an opportunity to meet women from other organisations. Please see the proposed agenda attached.
At a recent meeting in Berlin the organisers of the Forum agreed to have discussions around six key themes. For each of the agreed themes, the ESF will arrange 4 or 5 plenary meetings. NAWO was not in Berlin as we are not affiliated to ESF and therefore we have not taken part in choosing the themes. However, what is very exciting given our emphasis on women's equality is that at this year's ESF:
Women's concerns and a gender analysis will be a thread across all the issues addressed at the event. We hope this meeting will enable this decision to become a reality.
Our concern and that of our partners in hosting this meeting, is to engage as many of our members and other women and their organisations from as diverse backgrounds and from all over the country as might wish to participate and to facilitate discussion about organising seminars and/or workshops with others both on the chosen themes and on other topics. Groups organising seminars and workshops will bear the cost. It is anticipated that those attending may also begin to discuss with others how they may collaborate in presenting seminars. The system for groups to offer seminars will be open until July 25th, and you can also find out more about this process from the website: http://www.fse-esf.org/en/seminars.
These are the themes agreed in Berlin:
- War and Peace
- Democracy and Fundamental Rights (with a plenary on women struggling against oppression).
- Social Justice and Solidarity: against privatisation (deregulation), for workers, social and women's rights
- Corporate Globalisation and Global Justice
- Against Racism, Discrimination and the Far Right: for Equality and Diversity
- Environmental Crisis, against neo-liberalism and for Sustainable Societies
We look forward to seeing you
