Women's Library : Guided Walks starting in October

Suffering, Salvation and Suffrage - The lives of East End Women
Saturday 27th October 2007
  • Starts 10.30am: Meets at Whitechapel tube, ends at The Women’s Library (Tour lasts about 90 minutes)
  • Tickets: £8
  • Walking tours of East London often focus on the horrific sites of the Jack the Ripper murders, and overlook the other spaces and places in which women lived, worked and campaigned.
  • From Victorian prostitution to feminist co-operatives, this walk with Blue Badge Guide Rachel Kolsky takes in a range of women's experiences in the East End and offers an alternative perspective on the area.

  • The Battling Belles of Bow
    Saturday 24th November 2007
  • Starts 10.30am: Meet Bow Road Tube, ends either Bow Road or Mile End Tube (Tour lasts about 90 minutes)
  • Tickets £8
  • A new tour for The Women’s Library will centre on Bow and follow in the footsteps of Sylvia Pankhurst. She chose east London as the starting point for her campaign for women's suffrage and seeing the plight of the working women also established a crèche, restaurant and model toy factory in the area.
  • East End women were key to the success of the suffragette movement and the route highlights their supporters and their workplaces including the famous Bryant and May Match Factory, site of the Match Girls' Strike of 1888.
  • The tour will be led by Blue Badge Guide Rachel Kolsky.
