Do Public bodies meet the needs of women?
WRC Consultation on the new gender equality duty
Thursday 13th October, 2005
1-4pm, lunch included
Free event
The new gender duty, due to come into force in 2007, will mean that public bodies (like the police and local authorities) will have to actively promote equality between women and men. This legislation could be the key to pushing the agenda for women's human rights, and for real equality for women. But in order to ensure that this happens, the legislation needs to be informed by the experts on gender equality - women's groups.
Ian Shaw, from the Women and Equality Unit (WEU), will talk about the WEU consultation starting this October, which outlines specific duties that named public bodies will have to do, under the new Gender Duty. This will shape what the new gender duty will look like.
Women's organisations hold invaluable expertise about gender discrimination and meeting women's needs and we strongly encourage you to have your say about what public bodies will need to do to promote gender equality.
We want to hear your experiences of dealing with public bodies, like the police, local councils, Primary Care Trust, schools, etc.
- How well do you think they meet women and girls' needs?
- Do you have examples of good or bad practice you can share?
- What else do they need to do?
Come along to WRC's consultation to hear about the Government's proposals for the gender duty and contribute to our response.
