What is Beijing +10?

Beijing +10 is a UN world conference on women's human rights, which will take place in New York in February 2005. Government representatives will report on how far they have met their commitments on women's human rights. Thousands of women from NGOs from around the world will meet to discuss relevant issues and to hold their governments to account. They make sure that the voices of groups which might otherwise be marginalised by governments are heard. See http://www.wrc.org.uk/currentissues.htm for more info.

We want to raise awareness of Beijing +10 and enable more women to get involved, especially those from groups that have so far been marginalised in UK involvement in Beijing+10.

To find out more and meet women who are going to the Beijing +10 conference, come to this meeting co-ordinated by the WRC.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Karen Chouhan from the 1990 Trust on why Beijing +10 is important for Black women and experiences from the World Conference Against Racism in South Africa.
  • Poonam Joshi from Amnesty International UK on how they have used the Beijing Platform for Action to lobby the UK government.
  • Annette Lawson from NAWO (the National Alliance of Women's Organisations) on what's happening at the Beijing +10 conference and why it's important.
  • Tania Pouwhare from Women's Resource Centre on non-governmental organisations activity at the last Beijing +10 conference.

You will also get a resource pack with info on how to find funding to go to the conference in New York in February 2005.

The event is free for Women's Resource Centre members and non-members, with lunch provided.
