Forthcoming Event

44 Portland Place (YWCA Central Club) : Events in November at 44 Portland Place

Craft Group - Wednesday 19 November 13.30 – 15.30

Either bring your own current craft work and take part in the conversation or help us make a few very simple patchwork blocks which we will turn into a small quilt for Project Linus. (A voluntary organisation, providing blankets and quilts to sick children in hospital). The materials will be cut and marked ready for sewing – running or back stitch. Needles, thread and scissors provided but, if you use a thimble, bring it with you.

Book Club – With Angela Broad - Thursday 20 November 14.30–16.00 - ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Half of a Yellow Sun recreates a seminal moment in modern Africa history: Biafra’s impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and the chilling violence that followed.

With astonishing empathy and the effortless grace of a natural storyteller, Ngozi Adichie weaves together the lives of three characters swept up in the turbulence of the decade. As Nigerian troops advance and they must run for their lives, their ideas are severely tested, as are their loyalties to one another.

Film Club with John Wischmeyer - Thursday 27th November 14.00 or 19.00

Take your pick from the 14.00 matinee or the 19.00 evening screening complete with live piano accompaniment. Tickets:
* Members £3.50 and Guest £6.00
* Evening Members £9.50 and Guest £12.50

A Cottage on Dartmoor (Anthony Asquith 1929)

Shot on location in the bleak landscape of Dartmoor, this is a tale of jealousy and revenge – an expressionistic and claustrophobic account of sexual obsession and jealousy, this film is very Hitchockian in the way it deals with the resulting crescendo of suspense, especially in connection with a key throat-cutting in a barber’s chair incident. Asquith crafts a wonderful film. It has much of the dark atmosphere and tension that noir films are known for. There is a lot of sexual tension, a love triangle, and dark, stylized lighting especially at the beginning and the end of the movie. Most of the story is told through a flashback.
